Went Barfishing last night for the first time, well, tried at least, at McDonald Beach in Richmond. Had huge problems with the setup and the dogs eating my bait. No fish but a nibble, lost it. I couldn't produce a single good cast with the size, 3, 4 or 5 pyramid bar weights, either the weight plunged into the water right in front of me or it broke the line and flew off while casting. What did I do wrong? I later changed to a running weight that I used for bottomfishing in lakes but I got snagged twice and left the place. The boats and the dogs are annoying, causing little tsunamis and eating your bait. Probably not a good place to fish anyway, there was no one else around there either but since I work at the airport it was worth checking out. I need to find out what was wrong with my setup, I was using a medium-heavy 8 feet spinning rod I got from Army and Navy (apparently good for saltwater and salmon fishing) with 20lbs main line, three way swivel, and 10lbs leader (40cm) and 10lbs line to the pyramid weight, DIDN'T work whatsover, HELP PLS.

That McDonald Beach offers some good fishing. Particularly on the North Side of the River, but it's all Golf Course Area there, so it's private property and you can't violate that. I have watched FN net over there on the north side and haul in springs and Socks like crazy...

Hey myabe 10 pound test line is not enough for a 5 ounce pyramid weight. When i got barfishing i use 8-15 ounces and 35 pound test line.

Sounds to me that you're not releasing the line soon enough or not following through on your cast.

The dogs were eating your bait ?? What bait were you using and where were the dog owners ?

McDonald beach is busy with people walking their dogs apparently and sure enough some of those are sniffing everything...I was using cured salmon roe I had bought from Walmart that seemed to attract dogs more than fish. The bait was another problem I encountered, it is very soft and comes off the hook just like that when in water.

yeah that stuff is not boraxed so it will come off your bait loop quickly. if you gonna keep using that stuff then buy some colored mesh and spiderline and make a small baitbag. before you slip the bag on your hook pierce a couple of the eggs then cast it so the milk will provide a scent trail in the water.
