Buntzen Lake Aug.22nd.
« on: August 23, 2005, 01:43:26 AM »

Tired of waiting for the pinks and sox opening, today i decided to go back to the local lake and try a bit of trout fishing.  Got there at around 3:30pm, i picked the the second floating dock to the right of the boat launch entrance, about 10 mins walk.  to my surprise it was quite crowded on a monday afternoon, the dock i fished at was occupied by a family of 6 who r japanese, kids were playing and running around, and it happened that i've met the dad who was doing fly fishing at garry point park before.  he was doing fly fishing there today too, not much luck he told me except a 25 cm long pike minnonw.  i used float and shrimp, kept catching finger size pike minnows, then i switched to power bait, thinking of trying out the bottom a bit, no bite at all and got snagged few times.  there were countless small pike minnows just under the dock, with the bigger ones wandering around in the bottom. no wonder i always heard people saying the trout/char populations in the lake are not growing.  a few boats were trolling in the middle of the lake, a guy caught a 3lbs cutthroat and two decent size rainbows. He too, said that the pike minnows were too evilish and annoying, hooking like 5 of them in half an hour (large size). he bonked them all.   ;)
at around 7pm i moved to the dock beside the boat launch since it wasn't that crowded anymore.  caught no trout there for an hour, landed two largescale suckers (about 8 inches) and a few sculpins.  The trout fishing in this lake is just not the same anymore, as i remember catching trouts easily from the shore few years back.  the scary numbers of pike minnows is a growing concern to the system at this lake.  maybe we should just bring up a pike minnow derby like they did at cultus lake?   ::)
