Oct 16th - an hour on a local river
« on: October 16, 2005, 11:22:55 AM »

My Dad and I decided to go out for an hour this morning.  We got to the river just after first light and were pleased to see not single sole in site.  Nice colour, maybe 3-4 feet of vis with a slight dirty brown colour but the river we were on was on the rise as we could see lots of leaves caught in the flow.

I only had my centre pin and my dad had a spinning out fit.  While I went to the head of the run to drift it, he worked the tail out with gear.

I had been standing on a rock that dropped 6-8 feet straight down with the main body of the pool being 15 feet or so.  After 40 minutes of trying out 3 different presentations, I decide to move.   I had about 12 feet of line between my float and weight so I needed to shorten that up before I started hiking around.  I tucked my rod under my arm, grabbed my float and started to work the bobber down.

All of a sudden I feel WHAM WHAM WHAM.  My bobber is in my hand and I can feell the tug of a fish so I do what comes naturally, give it a yank to set the hook!  Fish on!!!  I see a 12-14 lb coho come rocketing out of the water...My heart is pounding....I let the line go and raise the rod tip.   NOOOOO, the line is wrapped around the rod!

I can see the coho twisting and turning right bellow me.  Only thing I could do is drop the rod tip and give the rod a shake...first time no effect, mean while I notice my bobber floating slack on the surface.  I drop the rod tip again and this time when I pick it up its free of itself.  I start to reel in the slack and from out of nowhere, my reels starts screaming! Fish still on!  After a 10 minute battle which included 5 cart wheeling jumps a solid 12 lb chrome wild buck gently slid into  my hands!

That was probably one of the most memorable battles I have ever had and the only thing to disminish it was that I didnt have a camera.

After that I managed to hook 2 more fish, a 6 lb hatchery doe and a very nice chum which was long line released.

During this time my dad hook one 7-8 lb wild buck on one of my marabou jigs!  That was pretty cool as he had been sunked until he tied on one of my creations!
