Vedder Oct. 15
« on: October 16, 2005, 11:05:36 AM »

Went up to the Vedder near Tamihi to fish for a couple of hours prior to sunset. The deeper, chinook pools were fairly busy, but the nice little pocket water/ side channels for coho were completely unoccupied as usual. I fished for about an hour and a half and hooked into 3 coho. The First one was a wild male about 14 lbs; gently released. The next was a hatchery doe of 10 lbs ( I have a scale with me). The 3rd was a wild doe about 8 lbs. Pretty fun few hours there. Everyone else I saw only hooking chinook or chum.

I use peach wool that I put in a zip lock bag with some pink eggs. I let the 12 pieces of wool that I cut sit in the bag in the fridge overnight. By the time the wool goes on the next morning, it has the scent of eggs on it. Also, I fish with the wool for no longer than 20 - 30 minutes before I squish the water out of it and put it back in the zip lock bag and replace it with a fresh piece of egg soaked wool.

That is one nice fish! I have yet to land any coho this year. I have hooked only one, but after my heart went in my throat, the hooked popped out.

I'm afraid that size 2 hooks don't hold well enough. Have to go to the store and buy me some bigger meat hooks.
