a little help pls.....what am i doing wrong
« on: October 19, 2005, 08:45:57 PM »

first off, I don't want to start a debat or make any fuss about BB...........read enough threads about them since I got 'hook' to this site for about three months now. Anyway, about three weeks ago, I've been trying my darnest to catch or hook into a fish by setting my fishing rod with a float set up (fished at the Vedder). Been asking around Berry's people, reading lots of postings and tips from this forum but to no avail...needless to say, skunked for the last three weeks. Pls advise or point out if I should be doing something different. My setup is as follow.....

3 weeks ago.........25 lb test line with 3 to 4 ft of 15 lb leader
2/0 barbless hook and using just about any color of wools ( tried roes but hard to stayed on the hook )
float was mainly about 2 to 3 ft from the leader

last week..............set up was same as above except the leader got shorten to about 2 ft ( Berry's people advised that the leader should be about
                           18 inches )

cast up river and let the float flow down and retrieve.......saw lots of other people doing the same thing, only different is, most of them are hooking onto some fish............

Been fishing for about 3 yrs now but just starting to get serious this year and want to learn the proper etiquettes. thanks for any more tips and advice. Can't wait till next week so I can try again....I'll blame this week on the murky and fast water :)

Well for starters I would switch your mainline from 25lb down to around 15lb and your leader down to 8-10lb.

I would switch your hook size down from a 2/0 to a size 2 if using wool and a size 1 if you're using roe.

I would personally reccomend roe but if you're not confident in it then I would at least be adding some sort of scent to the wool.

As far as leader length goes I think you're bang on with shortening it. 18 inches is good for slower water but in really heavy water I often go down to as short as 12 inches.

As far as the distance from your float to wieght is concerened that is location dependatnt. I generally try to set my float to around 2 feet off the bottom. Remeber, you don't want to have your weight ever bump the bottom and two feet off the bottom is generally good as fish are much more prone to attacking items above them rather than below.

Another thing to consider is your setup. A centerpin or a level wind provide a huge advantage over a spinning setup as they allow for a longer natural drift without a swinging motion. Rod length is also important. I personally prefer a 10'6 rod as it allowes for better line control, however, many of our members prefer rods in the 9ft range.

I hope this helps. If you have any other questions please feel free to ask.

Donot get discourged as it has been a poor year for coho for most anglers that have been short floating with roe. Not all but most. Even "The Master" has only landed a coho or two so far on the Vedder so far this season so keep at it.

A lot, but of course not all fish you see being hooked on the Vedder River these days are being lined and are not biting.

If you are interested in learning a method to fish that has the fish biting your offering there is lots of info on short floating on the home page of this forum. If you cannot find it I am sure Rodney will post the link once again.

All you need to do is watch people who are catching fish, and mimic what they use and do. I started fishing a couple years back, and i watched how people caught their fish and then copied them. Soon enough I was hooking into fish, also part of fishingit is putting in the time and getting lucky.

all right...thx alot guys...using center spin right now( first time using this so the casting is a little bit off right now) , rod of 10' and will be switching to a 15lb line and 10lb leader for next weeks trip....my previous setup was to try and target springs, or chums, knowing that the cohos are tough. Oh well, now I can add cohos to the mix....next week can't come soon enough....
