2006 SALMON SEASON
« on: October 19, 2005, 03:22:46 PM »

Got this email from my local MP Chuck Strahl.
But take this with a grain of salt for expecting any improvement next year because as long as we have such out of touch Liberal Fisheries Ministers like Geoff Regan it just means more BS lip service. ::) ::)

Conservatives force Minister to support Committee’s recommendations

OTTAWA - Official Opposition Fisheries and Oceans Critic Loyola Hearn was pleased by the support received from the Minister of Fisheries and Oceans, Geoff Regan, when he voted in favour of the Standing Committee on Fisheries and Oceans report on the Fraser River sockeye salmon fishery.  Motion 19 on the concurrence of the report was passed unanimously by the House of Commons on Wednesday evening.  Hearn had moved a concurrence motion on the report in order to force a vote in the House.

“The Liberals had no choice but to support the unanimous report” said Hearn “It is great to see the Minister supporting the Committee’s recommendations.  It is disappointing this support wasn’t received in time for the 2005 salmon season on the Fraser River which turned out to be disastrous.”  He added, “I am taking this support as an indication that the committee’s recommendations are going to be implemented to ensure the 2006 season is a success.”

The Committee made 12 recommendations including:

The Department of Fisheries and Oceans establishing an enforcement branch in the Pacific region separate from fisheries management;
Restoration of the number of fishery officers on the Lower Fraser River are to at least the highest level of the 1994-2003 period;
Hiring 75 full-time permanent Fishery Officers to be dedicated to protecting the salmon fishery on the Lower Fraser River; and
The Department of Fisheries and Oceans should not shy away from limiting all fishing opportunities, both below and above the Mission bridge when the conservation of salmon stocks is at stake.
“Now that the Minister has publicly agreed to such recommendations”, says Hearn, “It is time for him to put the energy and the resources into implementing them so that those who depend on the fishery of the Fraser River will not continue to be frustrated by Government inaction.”
