Fishery Notice - Fisheries and Oceans Canada
 
Subject: FN0840-Salmon: Gill Net - Area E - Fraser River Chum
 
Chum Test Fishery results at Albion are used to generate an in-season Fraser River chum return; preliminary in-season terminal return is estimated at 1,600,000 chum.  This estimate will be updated as new information becomes available.
 
Opportunities to harvest chum will be constrained by management objectives for threatened salmon stocks presently migrating in the Fraser River including Interior Fraser steelhead and Interior Fraser coho. 
 
Harvest opportunities in both commercial and First Nation fisheries have been planned to minimize impacts on these stocks.
 
The first commercial Area E chum fishery opening in Area 29 is scheduled to take place next week and will be announced after confirmation with Area E advisors.
 
An update outlining conditions and details of this opening and other potential opportunities will be announced as soon as possible this week

Chum harvesting openings for commercial and natives

Get out there and catch some fish before they rake them all in with their nets.

Without going into great details right now as it's becoming somewhat repetitive for me to pick out the damages these fisheries may have, I'll just point out two issues that we are concerned about.

1. Cultus Lake sockeye salmon. I was told by one staff that their arrival takes place until late October, sometimes even December. We now have been told most have gone by so a chum gillnet fishery would not be a concern.

2. Steelhead caught will be placed in recovery tanks, which will hopefully revive the fish so they can be on their way up to wherever they are going, ie. Thompson River, etc. The fish may swim away right after release, how do we guarantee they will not die off a few days later?

Well there were sopposed to be around 16 million pinks or so coming through; however, it wasn't that great this year becuase of comercial netting. If there is 1.6 million chums coming through and gillnetting is going to be open, im sure it will affect the fishery of chums. Well thats just my thoughts.

Also consider that they are getting more of a crack at these Chum too because they weren't allowed to have a go at the Sockeye.

give me a break...chum fishing. definately not worth the price of roe.  hammered 12 chum in 2 hours in the stave. all catch and release as they wore our arms  out pretty fast. these cujos  sure are viscoius when trying to take the hook out of their mouths. you guys expecting chrome chum in the fraser? the dewdney has chrome chum if any are interested.

Here it is.

First Nations Communal opening of chum salmon will take place between Patullo Bridge and Hope, most will happen between October 21st and 23rd.

Economic opportunity openings are also taking place between Port Mann and Hope, from October 19th to 21st.

Commercial openings have not been announced yet, but openings are expected next week.

For 2005, commercial gill netters in Area E had a grand total of 2 openings or 18 hours total fishing time for chum.  They were also allowed to retain any chinook that they caught.  These openings took place on Nov. 2 and Oct. 26.  The total allowable catch for Area E based on a chum run size of 1.6 M fish is 240 000.  Between their two openings, the Area E gill netters caught about 58 000 chum.  The average catch per vessel was in and around 200 chum per day, with catches being lower for the second opening than the first.  The price being paid for chum at this time of year is between $2 to $3/fish.  So the Area E commercial fishermen made about $600 dollars each this year, minus fuel, moorage, licence fees and the time they took off their other jobs to go fishing.  Steelhead and coho bycatch was minimal.
