Headed over to the island yesterday 4 of us to join the Steelhead frenzy heating up. We had booked jetboats with Murphy's that can by greatly recommended. Arrived at the River about 9:30 after taking the first ferry out of Horseshoe bay. The boats were all ready and we hit the river by 10:00. Our guide Kevin was great, he operated that boat superb, not easy with the water being up still quite high but dropping. Visibility was great, water being crystal clear. Kevin had prepared huge loads of bait, roe bags, deli shrimp, roe skeins, plenty for the whole day. We made contact with fish early, but didn't manage to land those early ones. I am too inexperienced telling whether it is a snag or bite and probably didn't set the hook right before the fish was gone. There were a number of other boats on the river, quite a bit of traffic, not sure if that scared the fish off. Saw people fishing off the shores too, wonder how they get there sometimes. My buddy was into a nice fish around lunch time, and after a 15 min fight I got to scoop it out of the river, nice chrome hatchery male in the 12 lbs range
. Nice Keeper! We had gone down the river with the boat couple of bends with the fish one, Kevin handled the boat very safely, seemed not an easy job to me. I will email a picture of the fish to Rodney so he can post it. We made 2 more contacts but that was it for the day. All afternoon not a single bite. It was great fun nevertheless, being on that river on a nice day as yesterday. I would want to do it again even though it's not cheap, with all the ferry, charter, gas makes it a $300 day, but worth it. My buddy rewarded my clean scoop with a nice fillet that's sitting in the cooler next to my desk here. Wondering if anyone has some good recipe to share?
