Latest Report..Saltchuck Nanaimo to Sooke March 3rd
« on: March 02, 2006, 06:00:44 PM »

Here are the latest reports...stretching from the Nanaimo South and around Victoria to Sooke.

Get ready for LIFT OFF on some great fishing to start in a couple of weeks.

the first blurb is from one of the most respected charter operators from Nanaimo, and the second blurb is from Island Outfitters who has a large salt following and ear to the ground since on Vancouver Island Saltwater fishing is as much a form of recreation as surfing fishing with rod and Steelheading on the Vedder... :) :)

GABRIOLA ISLAND & AREA REPORT

On The Line  - March 1st, 2006 Report

By Bob Meyer - Silver Blue Charters

Chinook fishing is still sketchy in local waters. There are a few fish present at Thrasher, Porlier, and Hudson Rock. February used to be the premiere winter fishing month, with catches of 10 to 20 chinook not uncommon in a four to five hour charter. Most of these fish were under the 24 ½ inch size limit, and had to be released, but the action was terrific.

Then, in early March, the herring would spawn, then head for deeper water. There would be a period of about two weeks where the fish were hard to find, as there was so much movement of the bait and the fish. Over the past two years, the fish have been more difficult to find in February. Last winter I spent my time fishing at Thrasher (weather permitting) and did reasonably well there. Whereas, previously I’d fished the Grande area almost exclusively for the past eighteen years with great success.

Strangely, the fishing has improved in consistency in March over the past two seasons. Why these patterns have changed is anybody’s guess. D.F.O. claims that the smaller local herring schools now follow and join the main spawning mass, which has congregated in the Hornby Island area the past two years. If this were true, the fishing shouldn’t be as strong as it was the past two years in March around Gabriola. One thing is for certain, the migration and feeding patterns have changed for both the herring and the chinook here in the Gulf. If you are going out, strip or whole baits in the clear green scale Rhys Davis teaser, Coyotes in black/white or prism, or the back/green splatterback hoochies are good bets. Try them at 135 to 220 feet.

Prawning is terrific off the Flat Tops-try tuna cat food fished at 350 feet.

GOOD FISHING!

As the charter guy's report suggests..it is still sketchy..but then again...that's his report based on what results he turned out there locally on a charter...if you had the freedom to go and fish waters he didn't...you could very well do better.  I wouldn't let his report discourage you from a good hearted effort. Just think..in a Month and a half..they'll be ROCKING in Nanaimo! :)
