Peg Leg August 21st
« on: August 21, 2004, 08:04:01 PM »

Was out today. A few casts in - spring on! A couple good head shakes and runs.. my leader breaks. A few casts later- spring on strong fish big run.. leader breaks again#*!! WHAT! Retie my 20lb leader. 10min later spring on again! This one looks good, still on after 5 min then pow! Main line breaks!! What the ###**!! 50 lb fire line. Retie everything, check for nicks in line.. all looks good. 10min later fish on!! Whoooa peeling off line fast, torpedoing just under the surface. 15 min later I have in control moving it into a calm pool and my line goes tight. Awww man. I'm on a snag now! My friend wades in and kicks the submearged snag free and my fish is still on. The fish is dead tired, I just have to pull it in to shore... hook comes out. NOOOOOO! Well after that catch and release gently two sockeye. My buddy who has'nt hooked one all day gets and lands a 19lb red spring. Time to go. Those are the breaks. Good day all around anyway.

Got to peg leg a lil late, in the afternoon. Seems like everybody was gone by then.  Alot of people from down south camping.  Saw 1 spring landed.  Released 2 socks for 2 different guys(one each).  Nothing for me today.
Tried the bar rig thing.  Lost it to a nest.  How the h#ll do you guys toss those things out without getting the leader twisted with the main line?  Or do you just plop it out infront of you?  My 20oz weight was bouncing down the river!  We had 2 hits on a chartreuse SG,  both times the fish slammed it so hard the leader broke.  :o (with a bit of orange wool).

Were there nets out?  The spring we saw had markings all over.

Left with some coiled line and various junk left by other users.

Was interesting trying something new.

Dan, no I didn't have a boat. I was fishing the east side, where you drive in. Thinking about going tomorrow afternoon.

Also you either are casting out too far, the rocks are too small for your lead to hang on to, too heavy of line as the heavier it is the more drag of course or finally you are fishing too fast of water.

We find 25 pound test main works ok.

Keep at it. ;D ;D

Thanks guys,  I had an inverted pyramid 20,  and a block 14.  The 14 seemed to bounce faster than an 8,  weird.

Didn't have a rod holder so we were holding the rods.  Were quite surprised at how hard they were hit.  Perhaps the twisting with the main may have created some nicks in the leader.  ??? Gunna make a rod holder in my spare time  :) That should be fun.  I heard DS had a time with his.

Will have to look into these "knuckle dusters" as the only ones I have now are for the fly rod.

Was that a net down at the bottom of the parking side of the bar?  I thought it was a floating fish until I noticed it was still there when I left.

P.S. The fishing in the afternoon wasn't "Great".  Peaceful however  :D
Only saw 3 socks flossed. 1 spring.  (and the 2 that broke)

A easy rod holder to make.
Two to 3 foot  long angle iron, sharpen one end.

2 to 3 inch diameter 15 inch long or so PVC pipe.

Duct tape to tape PVC pipe to angle iron.

You are then ready to roll
Red Green will be very happy with your piece of work. ;D

Not fancy but we used them that way for years until everyone got fancy.

Being Japanese does't seem to stop people from being blond, blue, green....
