Timbo, a setup used for barfishing in the Fraser would be a bit heavier than what you would use for the Vedder as barfishing requires a much larger weight.
For barfishing, Trophy Fraser King rod and an ABU7000 reel or a mooching reel is a good setup. The size of the weight used should be big enough (15 to 20oz? I can't remember) so it would anchor on the bottom. The length of the leader is usually between 2 and 4 feet. At the end of the leader, a large spin and glow is used. Do a search on the forum as I remember there are some past threads that discuss barfishing techniques.
For the Vedder, a rod rated between 12 and 20 should be sufficient for the chinook salmon. Your choices are Shimano Convergence, Trophy, Fenwick. For a reel, I recommend that you go with something that is slightly pricier but more durable. Shimano Calcutta or Daiwa Luna. The size of the reel should match the weight class of the rod.
