Noodling
« on: March 31, 2006, 06:15:09 PM »

Hello fishers,

I recently watched a documentary called Okie Noodling.  This was about the somewhat secretive tradition of hand fishing for catfish.  Anyone watch this or ever try it?  I was thinking of heading down for their annual tournament if I have time next year, anyone care to comment?

Yeah, its a bit of a crazy sport.  There was one guy who got a beaver to chew up his arm... must have looked like a sharpened pencil after that.  :o

Makes it more sporting when your target fish is 50# and you have to dive under water to get it.

Mad stuff no doubt!

I'd be wondering if I'd ever see the light of day after putting my hand in a mouth like that!

However I think you'll find the first pic is actually a Wells Catfish, which I don't think are present in N.America - but tell me if i am wrong.

It was most probably caught in Spain in the River Ebro - with a Rod and line - noodling fish of that size would be suicide!

cheers,

Paul.

I saw that "Noodling" technique on a show called Dirty Jobs on discovery channel. The host of the show ended up giving it a try and came up succesful :D. With those murkeywaters and snapping tutrles about.. I dont think I'll be trying "Noodling" anytime soon ;D
