Poor DFO, gets blamed when people get skunked.
The absence of the test fishery does not indicate DFO lacks interest in the state of the eulachon population. Why should DFO allocate a portion of the fund to conduct an in-season test fishery when no First Nation, recreational and commercial fisheries are scheduled for 2006? There are already three other pre and post-season indicators for run-size estimates.
From the reports that I've received, eulachons have already shown up in good numbers in other parts of the river, maybe that's where your sturgeon have gone, to feed on them.
What is to be done folks?
One can start by reading
this.
FYI, eulachon is a highly discussed topic among DFO, SFAC/SFABs and other interest groups. It maybe wise to do some background research or even get involved in the management process before laying out accusations of negligence.
