Brohm Lake April 27th
« on: April 28, 2006, 12:17:46 AM »

Hey... Two fishing outings within one week, somebody is slacking off! ;D

My friend Nikolai, who I introduced fishing to last year, contacted me earlier this week and wanted to take the Brandywine Flyer out for a day. Last April, I took Nikolai out to Buntzen Lake, and he was able to connect with a couple of stocked rainbow trout on one of my spinners. Last September, he came out again for pink salmon, and managed to hook around five. He is rather hooked. :)

Today, since he wanted to catch something that he could take home to eat, we decided to hit Brohm Lake as it was recently stocked. Brohm Lake is just north of Squamish, the little swampy pond that most miss as they drive by on the Sea to Sky.

We arrived at the lake around 1pm, after the usual quick stop at Tim Horton's. :) The lake was empty, not a single person around, we were excited. :D

The lake was calm most of today. Occasionally a light breeze picked up, it was perfect to be out.

Those catchable rainbow trout? Well... ::) Someone must have stocked them into the wrong lake. ;)

The lake is littered with these tiny cutthroat trout, ranging between 6 and 8 inches in length. We ended up catching and releasing a bunch of those, making it an exciting afternoon nevertheless. :)

All the flies that I tied up worked today, so I was happy. They even stayed together after all the beating. :D

No fish to take home, but certainly an enjoyable day to catch up with an old friend.

1. It seems like I always need to stretch my arm out for photos these days. ::)

3. Nikolai with his first catch of the day.
4. Making himself comfortable on the boat.
5. The view this afternoon.

The trout that are put into the lakes around the Lower Mainland are all Fraser Valley 3N rainbow trout, which are between 10 and 14 inches in length. Their average weight is between 200 and 300g. We did see some fish in that size range clearing the water a few times, but none were near our boat. :-\

When you settle down at the new place, you should give Deer Lake, Sasamat Lake, Buntzen Lake, Rice Lake, Como Lake, Lafarge Lake a try. They should fish very well until late June. The hatchery will stock these lakes a couple more times before it becomes too hot.
