lower Fraser-May 7
« on: May 07, 2006, 04:17:17 PM »

Headed over to the north arm this afternoon to do a bit of barfishing and coarse fishing, got the girlfriend setup with some roe and a bar rig to try for some bull trout, and I set myself up with some dough balls on an ultralight setup hoping for some chub or bullhead action.  The wind was really howling and although I was getting bites it was to hard to really feel them so I gave up on the chub.  A few minutes later I was watching the bar rod and in between gusts of wind I noticed a small tap tap and set the hook. The small fish started leaping everywhere and I though it was a fiesty dolly, but as I reeled in I could see alot of dark spots so I assumed it was a cutthroat, but upon bringing to shore I noticed it was a nice looking little rainbow, or possibly steelhead smolt? that was the only fish caught today but put up a nice fight for the size unlike the fight of the hatchery fish I have caught lately.

In lots of them its very hard to see or sometimes not there. Cutties have lots of different looks it gets confusing. ???

It looks like a cuttie to me.

I find a lot of people call bulltrout "dollies" and I often wounder if they use the dolly name for quick ID or do they not know that dollies and bulltrout are two completely diffrent fish. They don't even look alike as dollies have an underdeveloped head compared with the cutties.

anyways...nice fish

the fish in the photo is definitely a cutthroat. The spots are somewhat x shaped unlike the definite spots of a rainbow. The deifinite mark of a cutthroat is not the red slash under the jaw but the length of the maxilary, if it extends past the eye it is a cutthroat
