Have heard so much about this lake, decided i had to give it a shot. Called up on Friday to ask about our memorial day weekend and it's booked too at tonkwa lake resort..I asked about this past weekend and the guy said it was open so up i went.
Left Sat. morning and got up there around 10:30 am, there was still snow on the ground from Friday...i was dumpfounded, i was wearing shorts thinking it was going to be a Kamloops golfing weekend kind of hot...big surprise there, luckily i brought longjohns for the waders. Sun was out and it warmed up some but was quite windy, I rented a boat the first day to check out the lake some...It's not small and a motor would be a nice thing to have there. Fish were jumping every where...It could really get to you after a while, especially when you get skunked the first day after 8 hours of trying everything and they are just skying all around you..some big fat boys too..
Swallowed my pride and spent a good half an hour talking to a few guys who did much better, Like 30 fish day..
turned out they were from Bellingham too and one was a member of the fly club I'm checking out, 4 corners fly club...they told me Tonkwa is a big time chironomd lake, especially this early, they also told me how to fish them properly...
Went out Sunday morning and worked it pretty good but again no love...decided i was fishing too shallow and moved off the sunken island into deeper water and fished the edges more, 5 hits, 3 landed...What a blast, they just go nuts, coming out of the water and dancing all around you, very good fighters for little guys...Kept them as proof to my wife that i can catch fish once in a while and also to show i was fishing on mothers day and not off running a stable full of foxy mamas...OK, in my dreams anyways...thank god for daughters and softball tournaments on mothers day weekends...
Had a great time, RN came up too but got skunked as he wasn't listening to the FFG....got toasted by the sun today..came home looking like a raccoon...
