Went camping on the weekend with friends to the Alice Lake campground. Fabulous sites! Booked solid though. We had pretty nice weather, although the wind was blowing pretty good. Does it always blow in Squamish? Anyway, Alice lake was really slow. No stocking can do that to a lake. Only one tiny cutty landed by our camping associate.
So we wandered over to Stump to give it a try. Not very much shore access, but we found a clearing and set up. Right away we had some action. Some monster hits, but we just couldn't make them stick. In fact we counted over 10 fish on, and 0 to the beach. It then shut down for a while. Our friends only had Campbell soup for dinner, so fish was on the menu, and so far the pressure was building, and he was going hungry.
We decided to try again later in the day, and seemed to have the same problem landing the fish. They would either pop off, or get wrapped around the various trees lying in the water. I guess that's why they call it Stump lake. Finally we landed one, and headed back to the campsite for dinner.
The next morning I headed out at 5am, and had no problem beaching 4, releasing 2 and losing 3, in a couple of hours. I headed back to the campground and alerted my friend and his wife about my success, and so they headed out. They got 5 between the 2 of them. I don't know why it was so hard the previous day, but it was good to see some come to shore for a change. I guess the pressure of catching dinner, reflects your ability to land fish. Not that relaxing either.
All and all, a great weekend. Beautiful scenery and some good fishing. We will definitely be headed back there again.
No pictures, sorry.
