Join us on July 8th, Fish for the Future!
« on: June 22, 2006, 04:24:32 AM »

Starting a new thread on Fish for the Future... :) and a poll just to get a sense of how many from the forum will come out.

So, most of the preparation for the event is now complete. The rest of the work will be done a few days before the event. I hope many of you will join us, as not only you can pass on some of your fishing knowledge to those who are eager to learn, but also learn something from the activities at the event. :)

Activities that you can look forward to this year!

Flytying: Chrome Mykiss (Carlo) will be doing flytying clinics for kids (and some adults if time permits) throughout the event! Carlo is an avid stillwater angler and spends a good portion of his spring months at the interior lakes. During the clinic, he will be helping kids tying up some simple flies of their own chosen colours. Every kid who wishes to tie will go home with at least one fly.

Flycasting: Newsman (Jeff) will be doing flycasting demos and clinics throughout the event. This is available to anyone who wishes to learn. No sign-up required, just show up and ask him questions.

The Critter Station: Fishersak (Mark) will be looking after this wonderful booth that was extremely popular last year. At the critter station, you'll find several aquarium displays. We'll have one large aquarium where kids can temporary place the fish that they catch in so everyone can observe how the fish swim, feed and behave with others. In a different aquarium, we'll have aquatic insects, mainly from streams. Want to take a closer look? Scoop some out with the small net and observe them under the microscope.

Birds of Prey: OWL (Orphaned Wildlife) based in Ladner will be on site with several birds that are currently at their shelter. I do not know which birds they will bring yet but usually one can expect to see an eagle, an owl and even a hawk! This is a fantastic opportunity for those who do not get a chance to go on birdwatching tours. Learn the problems these birds face in urbanized areas and how you can help.

Burns Bog: Burns Bog Conservation Society will have an information booth set up to give everyone a better understanding of this complex ecosystem not far from Vancouver. Ask them about the group tours that are happening this summer holiday.

The Salmon Station: Alison from Gibbs Fishing will have a large display of Gibbs lures for those who are interested to find out which lures work best for which salmon species. There will also be a kids casting contest throughout the event at this station. The Seymour Salmonid Society will be displaying an aquarium of juvenile coho salmon. Ask the staff about the beautiful Seymour River and what you can do to preserve this watershed.

Fishing on the Floating Dock: This is what most kids come for! ;) The floating dock at the No. 2 Road Pier is a fantastic platform for anyone who enjoys fishing. For those kids who do not have a fishing rod, we'll have some available for borrowing at the pier. Bait, hooks, weight, line, buckets etc will be available as well if you do not have any. Dragonspeed and Rantalot will be on the floating dock helping everyone with the fishing. There will be fish id cards for the kids to use if they catch a mysterious fish.

The Fishing Information Booth: Beside the licence and registration area, there will be a fishing information booth. Free brochures, fish id cards, etc that are provided by DFO, Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC, and this website will be available.

Drinks and Draw prizes: We're not sure if we are doing draw prizes this year yet, because there wasn't much interest last year. We'll have cold soft drinks and water for sale at the event. The fund generated from this sale goes to next year's event, so I hope you are all thirsty! Volunteers of the event get a free drink each by the way.

That's about it! Here's the information of the event again:

Date: Saturday July 8th, 2006
Time: 10am - 3pm
Location: No. 2 Road, London's Landing (southern end of No. 2 Road, see map)
Website: http://www.fishingwithrod.com/fftf
Questions? email Rodney info@fishingwithrod.com or post it here

Just to give everyone an idea how this event is funded and the limitations that are holding us back from expanding it. Each year this event receives $500 from the Family Fishing Weekend Society. Last year, our soda sale and draw prizes raked in around $60 after other expenses are deducted. So for this event I am working with $560.

So far the cost:

Advertising in one edition of Richmond Review (newspaper)..... $187 + tax
Advertising in World Journal (Chinese newspaper)..... $75 + tax
Table and chair rental..... $85 + tax

So that's $347 used already, there are still misc. items that need to be purchased just before the event. Ideally I would like to also place one ad in the Richmond News but this budget does not allow it.

Thanks to Bwi Bwi, his shop has done all of the printing of posters, flyers and other reading materials for the event at no cost! Redl Sports is also very generous as always with rods, reels and flytying material. Berry's donation of massive amount of dew worms keeps all the young fishermen happy. There are so many other friends and sponsors who have been so helpful over the years continue to make this event possible, I will post a complete list of them once this is finished. If you would like to help us, please email me. This is not a Fishing with Rod event, Fishing with Rod is simply a sponsor of it. This event is being put on by all the volunteers who are coming out on July 8th.

We hope to see you on July 8th! :D

Bringing this back up so you can vote. ;D

Just another quick update. BC Hydro Powersmart will also be joining us on July 8th. They will also be bringing their hybrid Toyota Prius. :)

Back to the top for voting, and a brief update.

Sportfishing Institute of BC will be hosting information sessions throughout the event. If you have a question about saltwater fishing opportunities in BC, July 8th would be the time to ask it. ;)

There was an article about this year's event in yesterday's edition of Richmond News. ;)

I just checked the items that have been mailed to my house for the event... Redl has once again been very generous with 25 spinning rod and reel outfits that will be put to good use on July 8th. DFO has sent me these wonderful rockfish cards and fish id pocket books. Come early to get them, as I only have 100 or so. ;D I also have hundreds of these kids fishing handbooks that even the adults might want one! They have been donated by the National Fishing Week.

Good to hear that all six bucks are attending. ;D

Nina and I just spent four hours on a poster and flyer run. We first went to BwiBwi's shop to pick up these lovely posters, then off to Anglers West, where Uliwon donated two spinning rod & reel combos! We then went to Berry's Bait and Tackle, which will be supplying dew worms for the pier fishing once again, then to several community centres around Richmond. :)

Does buck_wife want to donate a couple of hours of her time for writing up kids fishing licences? :-[ ;D

:o I had a feeling I would get roped into helping out, never fails... :P
You can take care of our kids, and I'll help out... ;D what a plan!  :D
On a more serious note though, I should be able to help out.  8)

Excellent to hear Buck_wife, the help will be well appreciated. Buckeye can take care of the kids. ;) As usual, volunteers will get some treats on event day of course. :)

Now for bonus points, you have to kidnap Chris and throw him into the buck van so he will be here on event day too. ;D

I'll be there, burning on the dock with all the little whippersnappers :)  Sorry - the good camera is in the shop right now, but I'll try and bring something to photo document.

Might be a good idea to make up simple "business" cards that have a URL so that people can go to a "pics page" after the event (that means a busy night right after the event - editing and posting).  Some sponsor ads, and good publiciity for you.

Thanks for sending out the email to the scout groups. :D

I will have cards this time, lots of them... BwiBwi printed out a few hundred FWR cards in March, I'll make sure your pockets are filled with those. ;D

I'll also have event guides for the parents when they arrive because there are so many activities to do this year. :)

We just got back after dropping off posters and flyers at Nikka, Steveston and West Richmond Community Centres. :)

:o You mean Chris is not planning to attend of his own will??!! Guess I'll have to have a word with that man. Of all the nerve. ;)
Don't know about kidnapping him though, if we do that then the tent might not fit in the van (which Lew still has to come by with), soooo......which would you rather have...the tent or CG? ;D ;D

Btw, do you have a specific time slot that you want me to do, or shall we just show up on time and go with the flow?

If you guys don't mind (and I know you're all early risers, unlike me!), I would like to have the tent on the pier between 8:30am and 9am. :-[ We'll be there at around 8:30am, setting up seven tents that fishersak and I are bringing down... :o the tables and chairs will arrive on the pier at around 9:15am, then everyone else will arrive with their displays between that and 10am.

Ya, Chris said he has too many things on his plate. :p I think he is still scared to come here. Didn't you get mad at him for kidnapping Buckeye so they would have dinner with us in Steveston last year? ;D

Gulp! That means I have to have myself and the kids ready to be on the road by 07:30.

No worries! ;D kids usually hop on the bus at 07:15 for school anyways.... although they may not be too impressed with you, seeing as its summer holidays AND a Saturday  :P

As for CG, we're back on speaking terms again...lol  ;)
But for bringing up a reminder of that traumatizing day, :'( I think you now owe me dinner! :D

Make Rodney buy your whole family dinner at Sockeye City the scene of last years crime. The fish and chips are excellent and the Sockeye they serve there have not been flossed. ;D ;D Who knows we might show up for dinner too, after the event. ;D ;D ;D

A dinner outing is unlikely on that day, as we were always so exhausted after the event and just want to sit at home. :-\ Maybe someone can convince sockeye city to deliver some fish and chips for the volunteers. ;D

We were down at the pier this evening to take a look. The water clarity is quite good, expect to see fish. ;)
