fishing for sturgeon July 2nd
« on: July 02, 2006, 10:24:04 PM »

Nice day to be out on the water.  Not having wet a line since Steelie season on the Vedder I decided to do some kind of fishing today to justify all the gear that I own.  Original plan was to fish the Vedder for red springs but my friend jammed out on me so I decided to fish the fraser for sturgeon instead.  Got off to a late start and didn't realize that Army and Navy did not open till 11:00 am as I need my fishing licenses for the year.  After getting my licenses, off I went to a secret spot that Troutslayer and IH8XC know quite well ;).  When I arrived at the spot, nobody else was there so I had it all to myself today.  Armed with Oolies and some old salmon pieces marinated in a secret sauce, I proceeded to rig up my gear.  I immediately started to get some good taps on the bait but couldn't stick anything.  This repeated itself many times throughout the afternoon.  I had more taps on the oolies but the salmon pieces got some attention as well.  In the end I could not get any fish to committ so I went fishless for the three hours that I spent.  Saw quite a few large sturgeon jumping just downstream.  River seemed to be flowing quite fast as I needed a 14 ounce weight to hold.  Saw quite a bit of debris still floating down so it seems the freshet is not quite over.  Oh well a great day to be out anyways.

Went out for the afternoon today and only caught one. ;)

Could hardly keep the hooks baited as there were so many Pike Minnows.
Will have to try a different bait that is less friendly to those little finned vacuum cleaners.

It was my buddys first try at Sturgeon and he has never really caught anything big so i was really hoping for at least one decent fish for him to play with.
After changing spots and moving upriver we found a little bay that had a nice flow to it.
Finally we felt like we were fishing as the first spot just seamed too fast.
As soon as the lines were down, both rods were instantly bouncing with Pike Minnow bites and this continued for an hour . ::)
While watching the rod i instantly noticed a different kind of bite and announced ,"theirs a Sturgeon. ;D

I quickly picked up the rod and just as i wound down to get ready for the hookset the rod just started to bend and pull.
Quickly setting the hook i passed the rod over to my bud and the fish turns and starts to peel line at a good pace.

Angling right at the corner of a log boom and still peeling line, the surface explodes with a fairly good fish.
By now, buddy is asking me to take the rod but being the pal i am decline his offer. ;D

This fish then turned and slowly swam right at us as he reeled up and kept the tension on him.
Once the fish realised what was going on and felt the pressure again it turned and peeled out another 50 yards of line. ;D ;D

Buddy is now at the whining stage and even though i have attached the fighting belt i can see that the fish has caught him and not the other way around. :o

A few more dives beside the boat and we get it close enough to have a look and its a 5.5 footer that is in incredible shape.

I quickly take the hook out and it doesnt want to stick around and it disapears to the bottom of the river where it belongs.

This was the best fight that ive ever seen with a fish of  that size and i  sincerely thanked it as it swam away. ;)

My buddy was totally exausted and covered in sweat .
We just left the rods in while we sat back and relived the moment and had a cold pop.

Thanks to my Bud and Thanks to that fish for a really cool afternoon. ;D

Hey Doug would this secret spot be in tidal waters? I've been fishing at the info-centre in Mission but have'nt had any luck yet.
