Brunette River July 15th
« on: July 15, 2006, 09:49:55 PM »

I went to my favorite cutty & dollie spot on the brunette river to wet a line and target trout, no more than 3 casts later i had hooked into a bass, then about 2 casts after that i hauled out another bass, this is how it went all day until i hooked into a little baby chum no more than 8 inches long, then right back to catching the bass again, not one trout did i pull out today which is very unusual for that prime cuttie spot, not even a Dollie :'(

so to sum it up I caught over a dozen bass and a baby salmon, looks like our trout in the brunette are finally feeling the heat of the bass infestation  :(

it was a good day cause i was catching fish but the horrible realization of what the bass are doing to our native fish kinda won out,

Of course, realising there is a legal limit.  And don't forget not to waste your catch :)

you don't wanna eat nothing out of that river man, unless you have a deathwish.

if you don't believe me take a walk along the river for a few minutes and count how many sewage pipes are draining into it,

the fishing used to be really good in there but now it seems all there is in there in any big numbers are the damn bass and lots of em,. hence the reason I'm looking for a new spot in a near by river where the bass haven't totally destroyed the ecosystem.

the river runs through new westminster and Burnaby and flows into the Fraser around sapperton in new westminster, if you wanna fish for bass :o it won't be hard to find them.  ::)

PS. takes a while to get used to the smell of that river tho, cant say you haven't been warned.

Joshua, the Brunette River is a sensitive small stream that has been brought back from total destruction in the last twenty years. It is one of the last urban streams left in the Greater Vancouver Regional District. Groups such as the Sapperton Fish and Games and the Stoney Creek Environmental Committee have worked hard to bring back the salmon, cutthroat trout populations. Fishing is allowed in some sections of the river, I highly recommend those who are interested to treat it with care. Although there have been talk of presence of largemouth bass in it, there really aren't that many to accommodate anglers who would like to specifically target them.

Here is a recent article about the Brunette River in Burnaby News Leader:

For an alternative location, where you can't keep the bass off the hook even if you want to, you should convince your parents for a trip to St Mary's Lake on Salt Spring Island. ;) A few of us were there last weekend and had an amazing time.

We are considering doing another group trip during a weekend in September, if interested please let me know and I will keep you informed. :)

Not many to accommodate??????  :o
don't know how one can say that,  last year we would catch the odd bass but this year it's insane the amount in there all largemouth that the kids and I pull out not sure if there are any other species of bass in there. i sure do know the cutties are long gone and whats left of the cutties won't be around much longer, :(
the only restrictions on the brunette river are catch and release of steelhead , and no fishing between cariboo dam to cariboo road and no fishing for salmon.
make sure to pack out what you pack in if not more, god knows there is no shortage of waste along that river, you would probably find easier access to the water in the lower river, but if your up for some bushwackin' there are quite a few spots just above the BNR railroad tracks, remember to use Deet Lots a ticks around that area right now.

I would like to here how you guys make out in search of Cutties there next Nov. I would not be surprised to find that the Cutties have left that system in seach of cooler more oygenated water out in the Fraser. Fish migrate when able is seach of water in their comfort zone and my guess is that with the temperatures we have been experincing only Bass could survive in the slow flows of that stream.

their already gone man
 same with the dollies

caught ony 4 trout all summer in there, way down from the dozens apon dozens we would catch 2 years ago in a single 3 hour outting after work. maybe the steelhead fishing might still be good in there, we'll have to see about that, it was pretty killer last fall and winter during the pink and chum brunette runs, but all in all that river has gone to the bass  :(

I hope you weren't refering to fishing for salmon, because regulations state "No fishing for Salmon"  ::)
