Sockeye Openings Everywhere.... but the Fraser!!
« on: July 22, 2006, 08:43:21 AM »

I just read this morning that DFO has opened almost all areas for retention of Sockeye, except the Fraser.... of course. Doesn't seem to make much sense since the numbers are all still  very low in the test fisheries. Also read that FN's will be getting openings in the lower Fraser next week.... once again that doesn't sem to make alot of sense.  ??? Not really surprising considering who's making the decisions though!!

The current status of the Fraser River sockeye return provides for recreational
sockeye retention opportunities in most Southern B.C. marine waters.

Effective 00:01 hrs Saturday, July 22 until further notice, in those waters
open to salmon fishing in the following Areas, the daily limit for
recreationally caught sockeye is four (4) per day:

- Subareas 12-1 to 12-4 and Area 13 (Johnstone Strait southerly of Lewis
Point);
- Areas 14, 15, 17 to 19 (Georgia Strait);
- Area 20 (Juan de Fuca Strait);
- Areas 21, 24 to 27, 121 and 123 to 127 (West Coast of Vancouver Island);
- Area 28 (Howe Sound, Burrard Inlet and Indian Arm).

They always open the ocean first.
Also, the run that might be open on the Fraser is not there yet.

From what I gather Early Stuarts maybe still working through the Lower Fraser so they are trying to get every fish possible to the spawning grounds.  Once again, sadly the run is coming in at low numbers.

I've said this before and I'm gonna say it again. It will open August 3rd or 4th. The sockeye are obviously in some what good numbers in the ocean as they have opened those area's to sockeye retention. I've read test fishing reports on DFO sites (PSC) and they only get 1-5 fish but they claim that a group of 8-10 seals gets 20+ sockeye a set! just give it time and the runs will get here and you'll see an opening.

goblin59, the Fraser River sockeye salmon make their way from north to south before entering the Fraser River last so it is typical to see openings in the ocean before any openings are given in the Fraser River. Openings are only given once the Fraser River Panel believes the two stocks, Early Stuart and Early Summer, have moved through the areas of management. The stocks that are available for harvest are the summer runs, which usually arrive in the Fraser in August, but the dates may vary from year to year. Last year we saw a surprisingly late return of the summer runs, therefore the openings came very late.

One good way of following the management progress and reasons behind the decisions made is by reading the news releases of the Fraser River Panel. The latest news release came last Friday (July 21st) and can be found on this page.

I hope that clarifies some concerns of yours.

I have no concerns..... I was just putting the info out there. I read the PSC website daily and I'm well aware of how it works.
