Like Thickrick says, a lot of people will just buy from natives or the supermarket (where they get their fish anyway if the commercial is not open?) and stay home. The natives love that, don't they? Why not increase the daily quota to 3 or 4 to make it economically justified? They allow 4 in the chuck. Why not in non-tidal? Does that mean poorer people who can't own a safe ocean-worthy boat get shafted with the daily quota? It seems quite hard to figure out the DFO folks sometimes.
You're obviously misinformed about catching sockeye in the chuck.
If they're not schooling, and they're not out there in thick thick schools, anything you catch is strictly fluke. I'd be willing to bet you that a hundred or more sockeye were yarded out of the Fraser this morning alone on just a few bars. In the chuck? None. None that I've heard of this year.
This weekend, there's going to be hundreds if not a few thousands flossed and fished out of the rivers.
On the chuck, you could drive around all day and drop hundreds of dollars in gas on a given day while sockeye are open off the mouth, and you won't get a one. See what I mean? I'll borrow my friends 30 foot Grady White Marlin. Let's go fishing. You pay the gas. How about if we drive around all day, 30 foot Grady, can fish 8 rods, 500 hp hanging off the back (4 Strokes). 1.2 MPG at an easy cruise. Ok. 1.2 MPG x 50 MILES (not too far...launching out of Vanier) running around looking for sockeye...and fishing hard...fish 8 rods, 4 downriggers, 16 flashers in the water, trolling with kicker.
1 gallon= 3.78 litres.
1 litre=$1.17 at the local gas barge...
Gas bill is $225 for running changing spots alone.
You can buy the breakfast, lunch, and dinner, cuz that's how long we're going to need to fish at this time of year to try to limit out on 4 sockeye for you, and 4 sockeye for me. Your bill is suddenly coming up to $300. Oh yeah, gas for you and me to the marina may be substantial too, and my gas bill is going to be $10, I'm running a V-8 ya know..it doesn't run on air. How big is yours?
Don't go knocking the salties, fresh water anglers have it good during sockeye openings.
I'm unaware of any charter or sportsfishers this year who have caught a sockeye in the chuck locally around Vancouver.
If I were fishing for meat, heck, I'd head on down and start flossing and easily get a limit of 2 fish, and be back at home with a $30 gas/food bill and 2 fish as opposed to a $250 gas bill, plus plus plus..
More sockeye are fished out of the local rivers by sporties in ONE year than there is in 10 years by sporties in the chuck.
Heck the last 2 years, there wasn't even enough schooling to get into them when they were open!
