Just talked to a friend who spent a few hours out there and saw one sock landed. Maybe he was in the wrong spot if someone else seen thousands of fish breaching and tugging on the green wool. Shouldn't there be a Commercial opening any day now that the sox are open. :-\

Hey Roekid were you on Grassy bar?  I spent about 8.5 hours on the river today 6am to 2:30 and fished everywhere but Grassy(didnt want to fight the masses), other than the fish that came off Grassy though I only saw 3 Socks taken and one guy floating down chasing a Spring.  It seemed that the overall concensus was that it was a very slow day.  There werent even any fish leaping.  Sure did suck.

Two days ago, there were tons of sockeye while we tried to target spring. Yesterday a friend reported also lots of sockeye but they were not open for retention yet. Today I went to a bar above Rosedale and saw nets above the bridge. I proceeded to the bar & saw people carrying sockeyes out. W/o knowing sockeye is already open, I questioned them for illegally retaining sockeye, then I realized it is open. ;D

However, the sockeye fishing seemed to be good before I arrived. After that, in one hour of fishing with 50+ fishers, there was not even one sockeye hooked. That only suggests one thing, DRIFT NETS. We must be fishing the vacuum after some nets sucked out most fish below us. There were moments with small schools of sockeye going through (probably these fish get by the net in between passes), and I managed to limit out within 2 hours.  A slow day though compared to few days before. Many fishers went home skunked. If fishers plan to come after work, don't be too optimistic that you can hit your limit before sunset, unless those nets are out of the water. Does anybody know where the native nets are mostly concentrated besides those in Rosedale? Good luck & tight line.

Me and the roe kid were  not at grassy.  We were closer to hope at a walk in bar.  We arrived at 9 and left at 1.  We probobly saw around 30 socks taken although it is pretty hard to tell.  Fishing started to slow the last hour it seemed.  I hooked into two but lost them both.

I was thinking about heading out this weekend, but when you work out the amount gas is going to cost just to get to the bar to catch two Sockeye, I might aswell go to Safeway and buy some fish :)  unless you live within a few minutes of the river I can hardy see the point in fishing for them !!!!
the good thing is that all the losers that were flossing on the Vedder will now be at the Fraser.. the bad news is that it is a long weekend and the weather is going to be good so that means that there will be a million kids partying on the Vedder and it will be impossible to fish anyways ::)

Personally  I think this weekend is a write off (unless you like combat fishing) - it'll be open for a few weeks I think..no rush.

Like Thickrick says, a lot of people will just buy from natives or the supermarket (where they get their fish anyway if the commercial is not open?) and stay home. The natives love that, don't they? Why not increase the daily quota to 3 or 4 to make it economically justified? They allow 4 in the chuck. Why not in non-tidal? Does that mean poorer people who can't own a safe ocean-worthy boat get shafted with the daily quota?  It seems quite hard to figure out the DFO folks sometimes.

You're obviously misinformed about catching sockeye in the chuck.

If they're not schooling, and they're not out there in thick thick schools, anything you catch is strictly fluke. I'd be willing to bet you that a hundred or more sockeye were yarded out of the Fraser this morning alone on just a few bars. In the chuck? None. None that I've heard of this year.

This weekend, there's going to be hundreds if not a few thousands flossed and fished out of the rivers.

On the chuck, you could drive around all day and drop hundreds of dollars in gas on a given day while sockeye are open off the mouth, and you won't get a one. See what I mean? I'll borrow my friends 30 foot Grady White Marlin. Let's go fishing. You pay the gas.  How about if we drive around all day, 30 foot Grady, can fish 8 rods, 500 hp hanging off the back (4 Strokes). 1.2 MPG at an easy cruise. Ok. 1.2 MPG x 50 MILES (not too far...launching out of Vanier)  running around looking for sockeye...and fishing hard...fish 8 rods, 4 downriggers, 16 flashers in the water, trolling with kicker.

1 gallon= 3.78 litres.
1 litre=$1.17 at the local gas barge...

Gas bill is $225 for running changing spots alone.

You can buy the breakfast, lunch, and dinner, cuz that's how long we're going to need to fish at this time of year to try to limit out on 4 sockeye for you, and 4 sockeye for me. Your bill is suddenly coming up to $300. Oh yeah, gas for you and me to the marina may be substantial too, and my gas bill is going to be $10, I'm running a V-8 ya know..it doesn't run on air. How big is yours?

Don't go knocking the salties, fresh water anglers have it good during sockeye openings.

I'm unaware of any charter or sportsfishers this year who have caught a sockeye in the chuck locally around Vancouver.

If I were fishing for meat, heck, I'd head on down and start flossing and easily get a limit of 2 fish, and be back at home with a $30 gas/food bill and 2 fish as opposed to a $250 gas bill, plus plus plus..

More sockeye are fished out of the local  rivers by sporties in ONE year than there is in 10 years by sporties in the chuck.

Heck the last 2 years, there wasn't even enough schooling to get into them when they were open!

What FM said. The difference in daily quotas between tidal and non-tidal is due to the difference in participation. The total allocation is pretty much the same, but many more rod days in the non-tidal sector means less fish for individual anglers.
