Due to work and the excessive amount of sockeye bickering on the forum
, I have been unable to go anywhere further than 5km away for some fishing.
In the last couple of weeks or so, I have been stopping by some of my usual spots around Richmond, hoping to intercept a salmon or two.
The result has not been too encouraging. Just over a week ago, while chatting with Chrome Mykiss and spinning away, a monstrous chinook leaped straight out not far from us. At first I thought a seal was too happy based on the sound of the splashes. The fish emerged not too far from shore at a shallow spot where we normally don't see too many big fish around.
A couple of days later, I was able to connect with a jack chinook while spinning but only to find it popping off the hook several meters from me.
The last couple of days saw almost no signs of surface salmon activities, except the odd ones that were being tossed around by seals.
This evening we went down to
No. 3 Road Pier for some coarse fishing, as well as keeping an eye out for salmon. The gradual outgoing tide after the strong incoming tide usually results in good fishing for any species.
Armed with some leftover dough from our last youth fishing camp and a couple of ultralight spinning rods, we started off at the shallow end of the pier.
This pier is a good venue for a relaxing evening of fishing. The City of Richmond has done a great job to preserve this stretch of shoreline so residents can enjoy all sorts of recreational activities such as cycling, roller blading, running, and of course fishing. It is quiet, with clean washroom facilities, and the pier is very safe as long as adults supervise the kids properly.
Although most of the species we normally catch from this pier are small, there have been many occasions when we saw surprising and large catches. This is one of my favorite location for pink salmon fishing. It seems the first wave of pink salmon always arrives at this particular spot. During spring time it also produces very large bull trout. In late October and November, I have seen chum salmon leaping or finning close to the pier. Just a bit over ten years ago, a friend of mine found a tyee at the end of his line after jigging a buzz bomb on the pier for many days!
We started our fishing right after dinner at around 7:00pm. The fish wasted no time when the dough was sent into the water. A few fat peamouth chub came out within a short period of time, with a couple of tiny sculpins to boot as well.
At 9:00pm, we called it a night when the mosquitos started to feed. In total we were able to connect with a few dozens fish.
