Port Renfrew Aug 3 to 7
« on: August 09, 2006, 11:11:24 AM »

Fished hard for the first two days didn't even get a bite the water was very lumpy with big swells which made it very uncomfortable for the wife . The Chinook fishing in tight was slow and there were very few hooked by the boats around us . Day three my buddie showed up and we headed out early am started to troll at the rock pile and before we could get the second line down the first rod poped out of the release clip Spring on it fought hard and sounded deep as the battle continued the reel began to make some clunking noise inside >:( which had happened to me before got the 18 to 20 lb fish right beside the boat and then the reel seized. The fish seen the net and started to sound once again but I couldn't let him run and the line snapped at the flasher . :'( We did manage to rectify the issue with the gt 2000 it was a loose screw inside i guess the hour long ride across the logging road vibrated it loose. Trolling again with both rods down Buddies line pops this time and a quick battle we get an undersized Chinook to the boat and release it to fight another day . A while later buddies line pops again and this time he is into a good fight 20 min goes by and we net a 18 lb red nice fish . The rest of the day was very un productive and my buddie was getting sea sick the entire time ;D ;D . Day four we were up and on the boat by 4:45 and headed out to a new area further called Logans creek this proved to be a wise choice as the bite was on right away we both hooked fish and had a few good battles we lost 5 fish and i finally landed my first of the trip about 22 lb red we were also hooking tons of sea bass but we choose to release them as we didn't feel like cleaning them but they were all good sized. The Crabbing was great every time we put our trap down and came back there were at least 12 Crab in the trap one time there were 8 keeper males and we feasted on them yummy . Over all i would say the Chinook fishing is still slow there but the Sockeye was on fire  out of shore but we never targeted them as my buddie was getting seasick in tight to the shore and the swells were hudge as you headed out of shore . Still it was a good trip and can't complain as the crabbing made it worth while . we only ended up with one Spring each we released a couple undersized lost about ten . Port Alberni is next on the 18 of Aug to the 25 .

Thanks for the report. I'm heading over there on Friday for a 3 days. Too bad you couldn't get offshore, I hear the hali fishing has been great at Swiftsure. I hope the weather cooperates for us to allow us to get offshore for at least one day. I will post a report upon my return.

We could of gone out there the last day but the way my buddie was the whole trip I did't want to see him puke any more it was getting painful to watch. Good luck out there i am sure the fishing will pick up in the next week as I normally am over there that time of the year and almost limit out every time.

Not taking the boat as my partner already has his boat over there. Its bigger and better suited for offshore.  Only one more sleep now...woohoo!

Well, I got back late Monday night barely making it on to the last ferry. I have been busy until now with work and family but am finally able to give a brief report.

I arrived in Port Renfrew early Friday afternoon. After unpacking and a few quick bevies we headed out for the afternoon/evening bite. We stuck close to home and fished East point as apparently the fishing had been productive there recently in the evening. We fished with anchovies and after a quiet couple of hours I was rewarded with a nice 18lb spring.

The next day we got off to an early 6:00AM start and decided to try for sockeye first thing as they were biting in the morning. We landed 4 nice fish and then it died off, as predicted.

Next we headed further off shore for halis. The first spot wasn't productive so we headed further out as the seas were almost flat calm with just a slight swell but no wind. The next spot was more productive and we landed our limiit of 4 halis quickly. We also picked up a yellow eye while we were jigging for halis.

We then headed back to shore to try for springs but had no further success that day. The next day we didn't fish and did some work on the cabin that is still under construction as well as vacuum pack our catch.

The final day we fished for half a day and my partner was rewarded with a 25lb spring. It was a great trip and as my fishing partner says "I've yet to be skunked in Renfrew".

Flashers with 18"-24" leaders and small pink hootchies. The hootchies were made very sparse by cutting out at least every second tentacle.
