Coho On The Fly - Aug. 24
« on: August 25, 2006, 09:58:01 AM »

Was up in the Terrace/ Kitimat Area doing some work. Was able to get out to do a couple of hours fishing on the Skeena River. Using my fly rod to see if I could connect with a Salmon on the fly.   For the most part, the stretch i was fishing was pretty slow in terms of fishing action, but the scenery more than made up for it.  Then it happened my fly line stopped in the water, and then flyline started screaming from my reel.  All the fly line was  out of my rod within no time flat, and now I am into my backing. Slowly following down the salmon which is going down the river like mini freight train and stressing my 8 weight rod to the max.  I look down in horror to see that the fish almost has me spooled, so I make the decision to start running and reeling to hopefully save my line if the backing should let loose. Anyhow after this heated battle within ten to fifteen minutes I finally have the salmon into some slow water and am able to finally bring it some slow water to corral it. I expect to see a big Chum salmon, but instead it is fresh Coho salmon, and by   my estimate maybe around ten pounds. Gently take the hook out and make the decision to release it.  Can't believe how strong that Coho was, but I guess that is why people come from all over to fish these waters........

Floater: I am now back in the Lower mainland, but you are right with respect to to the Skeena River King Salmon. I would not fish for them with my 8 weight, as those fish would just blow it up. After fighting the fish I caught on Thursday, there is no way that I could see that I could bring one in.  But the Chinook run is now over on the Skeena for the most part, and what you will find in it  now are Chum, Pinks, and the Northern Coho which have just moved into the system.   And later in the fall I understand Steel head will start coming in too. But yes to flyfish for Chinooks, and especially how big they get on the Skeena, I would think the minimum fly rod would be ten weight, and in some cases I have heard that some people are using 12 weight fly rods.  In addition, you can also go to a Spey fly rod,  as lots of guys use those on certain stretches like the water found around Ferry Island.
