Vedder river October 1
« on: October 01, 2006, 03:23:15 PM »

Hit the river today with my dad. We got to the river at about 7 and decided to try our luck at a hole up top. There were 4 others there when we arrived. We stayed there for about an hour with no luck so we decided to move on. Stopped and had a look at Wilson, really low and clear but there were a ton of chrome springs holding on the bottom. Only saw one fish willing to take anyones offerings. We headed down river and started fishing another pool. There were a lot of fish being taken when we got there so our spirits were back up. In the time we were there I was able to land two chum that were both released unharmed. I also missed about 4 strikes. All in all it was a good day on the river with my dad even though we didnt get the springs/coho we were after.

I've been fishing today as well. Not much success, just one chum on, that was lost after a minute or two of crazy fight. It took my drenan, weight, and hook. Couln't believe it broke of everything, must be that my line was damaged.

On other note, please all of you who know how to recognize fish, pay attention to people next to you. Today I got really disturbed by a person on the run behind "On the way" store. As I was passing by, I have noticed a ripe sockeye in a shallow enclosure, barely breathing. So, I turned back and asked whose fish that was. The person that cought fish, tought that was a coho (plus if it was a coho it would be wild). After short talk with him and explaining him the difference between fish I let "his" sockeye go. Luckily it was still alive and went hapilly swimming away. It disturbed me so much that somebody would keep live fish at the first place, second not knowing difference between fish species (it could hapen to anybody at the beginning though), having his "buddy" next to him repeating "it is coho", and ignorance of everybody else who was at the run. Please spend a minute of your fishing time whenever you see somethiing like this. It doesn't take long and it helps all of us, including that fellow who I hope now know better. I never got in trouble speaking to people like this. Usualy they get really worried and I hope they learn as well.

Simply keeping a fish (alive) in a little dug out like that is illigal regardless of species.  Good on ya for politely educating them.

When we were fishing on Sunday a guy and his girlfriend were fishing on the opposite side of the river. He gets into a fish and gets it up on shore. I notice from all the way across the river its a sockeye. The guy was just starring at it. I yell out to him its a sockeye so let it go right away. He looks for another minute and says OH Ya it is, and lets it go. To me its simple. Sockeye have no spots. Coho, and springs have spots and both are open for retention. Chum are VERY easy to distinguish especially since they are colored in the Vedder.

I agree. He was looking at us as if to see if we were looking at the fish. If we were not paying attention he might have bonked it and moved along afterwards.
