Friday the 13
« on: October 13, 2006, 08:11:55 PM »

Well the wife finally got a day off so I decided to hit the fraser for some bar fishing. Arrived on the abby side of the mission bridge at 7:30am and got set up. I put on some nice cured spring roe and cast it out. As I sat there staring at the tip of my rod ( too foggy too see anything else) it starts to bounce and then bounce some more so I set the hook and fishon. I thought holy sh1t I thought that the 13 was sopposed to be bad luck. The fish comes in then goes out then comes in and the hole time I'm thinking that it must be a chum. It finally gets in close enough to see and it is a 3' sturgen. I gently remove the hook and off it goes. I put on some more roe cast it out and 30min later the rod dances again. I set the hook and this time the fish feels a little smaller so I thought that this one might be a chum but no this time it is a 2' sturgen. Again I gently release it put some more roe on and about an hour later the rod dances again and once again I set the hook and once again it is another 2' sturgen. I hook to more fish after that and one broke my leader and the other broke my bar rig. There sure was a lot of fish jumping and rising but only saw one hatcher coho hooked and landed and a monster seal on the mission side of the river. I was sure surprised by the three sturgen today as I was not even fishing my roe on the bottom but it sure made for a pretty good day considering it was Friday the 13.

Nicely done. I ventured out today to the Vedder and my coho less streak continued once again. The Maple Leaf Stealth only went down once when I was looking away. Others around me were pulling them in as usual but I had to settle for 4 floats and $2.50 in bottles. ;D

Had a nice visit with good friend Ian who was fishing with brother Archie, and friend Barry who were all fishing on the other side of the river.

Ian had just got back from the Alberta where they had some fabulous goose and pheasant hunting. Got to make that trip one day again in the near future.

Talking about pheasants, a friend gave me one that he shot today so the day was not a total loss as far as getting some wild game for the table.

Well, I was on the Vedder yesterday (Friday) and saw some pretty pathetic behaviour out there. I started off in a nice run with just 2 other guys. Within an hour - a bunch of guys came in and one guy moved up to within 3 feet of me. Everyone down below him was within 3 feet of each other. I politely suggested that there wasn't enough room. He just said that it was always like this and that we needed to work together. I stated that it wasn't fair that guys like me get up at 4:00 AM to get a spot - and guys like him can't expect to show up and just move in on people's space. I then left the run. I guess he won - but I really don't need to hook a fish so bad that I need to fight.

I moved downriver and had a nice chat with some fly guys. I fished for a bit with no takers.

I looked up and the guys were just snagging chum like crazy at the top of the run! One guy hooked a chrome spring in the tail and moved down river with it. He landed it. Right before he was going to kill it - I screamed at him - telling him that it was illegal to kill a foul hooked fish. He then put his fingers into the gills and lifted it up. I yelled at him to get his bloody hands out of the fish's gills! A couple of other guys were also shouting at him. He then released the fish. When he was walking back to the gong show, I apologized for yelling at him - but told him that he has a responsibility to obey the law and treat the fish with respect. He apologized and stated that he just wanted a photo. I offered to help him land a fish and take a photo if he hooked another one.

Didn't see any coho. Lots of chum and springs. Went to the top end of the river and landed a beautiful 2 - 3 pound dolly. I'll be back with the fly rod...

kudos to you FM, you showed alot of poise not to fight over a spot, but held your ground when the guy was abusing the fish. you have more control than i do.... and you've got "stugatso" (balls).  hats off to you... :)
