Any tips on fly fishing for chums???
« on: October 13, 2006, 09:44:55 PM »

Hi, does anyone have any tips on fly patterns for lower Fraser chums?  I was thinking of heading out tomorrow on an incoming tide and rather than use the spoons and spinners I was thinking of flies!  I guess at the same time I am likely to catch a coho too!!

Anyways, if you have any ideas, please share.  I've never fly fished for them and was told chartruse but hey, others may think otherwise! thanks

I've tried everything and caught squat so I'm not much help...but I will say that everyone that has caught anything has said they used small and sparse patterns...I thought I'd tied some small enough but I'm hearing size 10's and 12 are what are catching um...

Wow, I would have though you'd want to use larger flies for chums.  I know that you can use smaller flies for cohos but who would have thought chums?  Perhaps I may give that a try? thanks

Any other tips everyone?

Who ever told you that doesn't know squat! But like anthing else 10% can actually do the thing the rest just talk about it. Size #4, #2, and sometimes #1 Paul.

Paul, what kind of flies would you be suggesting to use in those sizes?

P, you're being too brave. ;D Those chums moving through right now in the Lower Fraser (at the spot where we met up) are very tight lipped. In the last two weeks of spoon tossing, only two were hooked up and both were lost. At times dozens fish would rolled on the surface in one ball right in front of me, none were interested on what I have been throwing.

I used these flies in the Squamish for chum with success (thanks to Stone for the pattern).  I'm not sure if they will work in the lower Fraser.  Very easy to tie.  Marabou tail with krystal flash.  Then tie in a body of plastic chenille.  I found the red and chartreuse colours worked great.  Hook is a Tiemco TMC 2499 SP-BL size 6.  See photo below:

BTW - I wouldn't use size 10 or 12 flies for chum - they would just bend out!  Small and sparse is what I use for coho when they're spooked out!  Chum tend to not spook as much...IMHO.

I fished the Harrison River yesterday with fly.  I used what's called Marabou Zonker in Japan and I could experience one cast one hit of chum.  I landed and released three male and all of them had my fly in the mouth.  Because it is not in the lower Fraser I am not sure if it works for that tight lipper, though.

I retrieved the fly after sinking it near the bottom by shaking the rod tip like I do for spinnerbaits.  This action makes the marabou part of the fly to move like breathing with big gill rakers.  I tied this fly on #2 of TMC 5262 hook.
