call me chum lover
« on: October 17, 2006, 07:02:10 PM »

Yesterday, I asked myself at least 50 times the question: where should I go, Vedder or the other river? The rain we had sunday sounded promissing for the Vedder, but giving how it affected the water level I finally decided not to go there.
Gear rod in the hand and fly rod in the jacket I arrive to my spot at first light to find a nice green colored water gently moving. A couple of casts later I connect with my first fish, a nice chum that comes without too much difficulties. The float goes down a couple more time without I manage to land any fish. Just for fun, I decide to change my offer for some wool, but no taker, so I put a colorado blade and it is not long before the float goes down... This fish is crazy, as soon as it is hooked it starts to run upstream so fast that the line whistles at the surface of the water. The fish then changes his mind and decides to go downstream... a bit to much dowstream... I loose it after it enters the fast water.
While I walk to the following run, I see my first coho, a nice wild fish, in good shape if we exclude the guts eaten by the birds and the big barbed gibbs croc in the tail... a bit sad.
I decide to give a try flyfishing and to apply the advices newsman and others gave me, but when I arrive to my spot a guide and two customers are already there. I say hello and after asking if I can fish the tail of the pool I do my first casts with my floating tip... Not really convincing... I am really a bad fly-fisher... I just feel nothing, I do not know if my drift is good or not... So back to the gear rod, to end the morning with a couple more fish.
12 fighted, 4 landed, 0 leader lost
Really nice morning to be on the river with these crazy chums.
