Squamish - Oct 19 2006
« on: October 19, 2006, 04:51:53 PM »

Got off work just after midnight. Got home, and got into bed about 1:30 am. My alarm went off at 6 am, and with a cup of extra strong coffee, I headed out the door to pick up my fishing buddy.

My fishing buddy, English Michael, was very chatty today on the drive up the Sea-to-Sky. This was a good thing as it kept me from thinking of wanting to turn around and go home to bed. We got to the river around 8:15 am, and noticed that there were not many cars around. However, once on the river, there were about 24 flyfishers having great success. As we were fishing with Drift Rods (Centrepins), we gave the fly casters a very wide berth and found a spot well away from them, so not to disturb their drifts. The only thing that the Chum hit was wool. In no time at all, we were "walking the dogs" up and down the river. I lost what was a chrome Coho, just close to the beach. I didn't notice if it was hatchery or not, but I did wave it "bye bye" with my best regards. The Chum were cloured, but had that metallic sheen to them; they had not been in the river long. None were retained as I was waiting for one that was chrome.

Water levels: Low (No kidding!) and Clear (Go figure!)

Be very careful on the highway. There is a lot of heavy equipment working, and traffic is stopped at a moments notice on many parts of the highway.

Tomorrow, I will be on the Vedder. Report to follow.

I too thought I caught a coho, but I caught 4 bull trout! Couldn't keep them off my peach wool. There seem to be a lot of them down low this year...good sign?

Probably, and certainly a good sign for the winter month's and early spring when I am going to go out and try and target some.  Never done it, but thanks to this site, I think I just might have to give it a whirl.

very nice report.....I too went out to Squamish on Tuesday with a couple of buddies.....flyfisherman were having more success than the three of us using spinning rod with various wool color. Saw 3 seals from where we were fishing......just as we were about to leave near sun down....lots and lots of school came in...might head out there again next tuesday. Took 40 minutes longer than usual to get up there with all constructions......

Fished the lower Squamished on Friday morning and very few chums coming in. Packed up and went up river and bingo the run was full on hard biting chums. For the most of them they were in good shape, coloured with a metalllic ocean shine and some with sea lice too.
Couldn't keep them off the fly then nothing after the pack moved on and the bite died off.
