The Stave; where else would I be.
« on: November 13, 2006, 10:27:49 PM »

The Stave is fishable again. Spent a few hours there this afternoon chucking flies. Spotted some clean Chum but couldn't get past the uglies, so I went hunting Coho. Spotted a half dozen; all tight lipped. Finished of the day with 35lb Spring.

Dear Mr Newsman,  where in the stave are these coho of which you speak, and if you feel like elaborating on the springs that would be great too.  I have fished the stave like crazy this year, mostly on gear, and have caught nothing I want.  I have caught plenty of chums (a little bored of having all my tackle chewed to crap) one or two pikeminnnows, and even a little 10inch cutty.  But anything to boast of.................. not so much.  Your insight would be very much appreciated.
Thank you

P.S.

I caught a coho there a few years back, trolling lures above the railway bridge, and from shore at the mouth. I have seen someone catch one by me last year 300 yards up from the garbage hole or whatever they call the old boat launch. They are there just hard to get.

The oxbows are oftain a good bet, but oftain dead slow so you need to be skilled with a dry line. I use my own patterns (flat black, met green, blue chistmas, and bite me!) which I have developed over the years. My flies are weight to sink at a medium speed which allows me the line control of a dry line while getting my flies down into the stike zone.

The bottom of the oxbows where they flow back in the main stem is also a good spot.

My fly selection for the Stave is as follows

Flat Black: Spring (I have observed that Spings are light shy and avoid any thing too bright or flashy). Also has proven itself to be a good Steelhead pattern.

Met Green: My knockem dead Chum pattern. this fly has netted me countless fish after fish until your arms give out days.

Blue Christmas: Good Coho producer and my answer to the Coho Blue which I have found to fragile for my liking.

Bite Me!: My latest and best Coho pattern; Dollies like it too. This pattern is the best Coho pattern I have tested. It has even topped my old goto pattern the rolled muddler. The name has a two fold meaning one to the fish, the other to my critics.

Newsman: where are these patterns listed? And if not listed perhaps this can be added to the list of flies in the demo flytying section which is to be done by ChromeMykiss.

You can find Blue Chistmas and Met Green (or Mat Green as it is also known) in the book "A Compendium of Canadain Fly Patterns).

As for Flat Black and Bite Me!, perhaps BwiBwi could help. I sent him some samples last year along with tying instuctions. For me to put them up on the bourd at this point would be a pain since I am not that computer skilled yet.

I have done well on blue muddler and merci blue both can be found at hatch matcher's fly and tackle. They are great for coho. Like I said earlier on this post, I have done well at the stave with just these two flies for coho.

I shared a bunch of my patterns, tying instructions included with a shop owner a year ago. I did this so everyone could have easy access to them. After I sent a few students there to aquire some of my recomended patterns, I receaved reports that he was not supplying them. I went back and asked him why he hadn't had his tyers make a bunch up (the agreement was that I would supply samples along with tying instructions and he would stock them in his store. this would give me a place to send anglers looking for my patterns). His responce was that the patterns I had developed were to good to share with everyone and that we did not want everyone to get as good as us. That from a store owner; Go figure? Anyway I have boycotted his store since that day. It is my wish to share my success with others not keep it to a selct group. This is why I shared my patterns with BwiBwi last year. As I said he is more computer literate than I so perhaps between Bwi, Rod, & Chrome we can get them on the board.
