Dear Mr Newsman, where in the stave are these coho of which you speak, and if you feel like elaborating on the springs that would be great too. I have fished the stave like crazy this year, mostly on gear, and have caught nothing I want. I have caught plenty of chums (a little bored of having all my tackle chewed to crap) one or two pikeminnnows, and even a little 10inch cutty. But anything to boast of.................. not so much. Your insight would be very much appreciated.
Thank you
P.S.
What flies go well for the coho and springs?
The oxbows are oftain a good bet, but oftain dead slow so you need to be skilled with a dry line. I use my own patterns (flat black, met green, blue chistmas, and bite me!) which I have developed over the years. My flies are weight to sink at a medium speed which allows me the line control of a dry line while getting my flies down into the stike zone.
The bottom of the oxbows where they flow back in the main stem is also a good spot.
My fly selection for the Stave is as follows
Flat Black: Spring (I have observed that Spings are light shy and avoid any thing too bright or flashy). Also has proven itself to be a good Steelhead pattern.
Met Green: My knockem dead Chum pattern. this fly has netted me countless fish after fish until your arms give out days.
Blue Christmas: Good Coho producer and my answer to the Coho Blue which I have found to fragile for my liking.
Bite Me!: My latest and best Coho pattern; Dollies like it too. This pattern is the best Coho pattern I have tested. It has even topped my old goto pattern the rolled muddler. The name has a two fold meaning one to the fish, the other to my critics.
