Trout?
« on: December 02, 2006, 03:02:35 PM »

:o Oh my Gosh...  I actually caught a fish - I really think it was a trout but perhaps you can help - it was a little longer than a table placemat, (sorry for the analogy) had round spots all along the top, tail also had spots top to bottom, was dark color but not rotten, and his belly was redish....  Am I thinking trout - maybe cuthroat?

Went to the Seymour mid morning, saw Bug Pumper (hello, was nice meeting you today - should have stayed longer)  I was using a very light weight fly rod, actually with floating line too (I know, not the right set up, but was all I can do for now)  I really missed fly fishing and thought I would give it a try....  Line is 8lb and leader is 10lb, although I am going to change to 12lb for tomorrow.  I think if I had a sinking line, I would have done much better....  Went to Highwater this morning and they choose some flies, and this one I caught swallowed it like he hadn't eaten for days....

I am so very happy I caught something - need to learn more about bringing it in on a fly rod though, it was heavy and I wasn't very fancy about it - but I got the hook out of his mouth, held his tail for a few and then he swam away - but how do you get him close enough to get him off the hook is what I would like to know?  I did it, but I know there just has to be a better way.

If I keep going this rate - I'll catch one every month :)  Hopeing my odds will get better - had a blast, wonderful day, cold - peaceful and no other fishermans pushing me around :)  Bug Pumper was so pleasant and helpful.....  was great to meet someone who taught me some stuff and I appreciate it.

Have a great day.  I am thawing until tomorrow - I'll try again.

Did you notice if it had a pair of red stripes near the head un the underside of the body ? If so, it would have been a cuttthroat, which it sounds to me like it is anyway, but sounds like a decent sized one for sure.

Rodney has put together a fish ID chart, maybe you can ID it on there:

Well done either way  ;D

The picture of the cutthroat shows spots all over - but this one only had spots on the top, not on the body - but it wasn't a silver or a chrome color it was really dark looking, but not like it was rotten...  like it was meant to be that color....  Oh my!  I wish I knew what it was because now looking at the pictures from Rod, looks more like a coho - but I thought they weren't hungry and this one almost swallowed my fly whole, was a big fly!  The only red was by it's underbelly, not stripes, more like patches....Maybe I'll catch another tomorrow and I'll get a better description.

Hi Sassy,

Nice meeting you today, sounds like you got a coho to me.  Thats what they look like as they get older. I would have stayed longer but had to pick up my wife, I would have liked to hear you scream when you got it on!   BP
