Best Lure or bait?
« on: December 06, 2006, 03:21:34 PM »

When it stops raining...  :( I want to head out to Agassiz and check out some of my old haunts. I'd like to chuck SOMETHING in for a few casts, and I'd like as much as possible to use something with the highest probability of hooking any fish that may be there. So...

What's the best OVERALL "thing" to try to catch a cutthroat, pikeminnow, or whatever might be in some muddy backwaters of the Fraser? I'm thinking wedding band and worm. Would any fly be better? What about a spoon or spinner? Or should I do bait on the bottom, either worm or roe?

My advice is not to restrict yourself to one bait, lure or technique. Experiment til you hit the winning combination.

Thanks! Good Advice in general. However...

I want to reduce the variables as much as possible. I'll be checking out water that may or may not have any fish in it. If I try a dozen techniques at each location, I'd be at one location all day (that may end up being completely barren).  Or, I may have the Ultimate Combination, but if there are no fish, how would I know?

I'm looking for a setup I could be fairly confident in, so I could bushwhack down to the water, try a few casts, and if I don't get any hits, move on. Once I FOUND some fish, I might try experimenting with other lures, flies, etc. just to see if something else works better at that location.

For instance, if fishing a lake for rainbows, I'd probably slow-troll a black minileech or 52 buick, depending on what I see in the water. I've had MUCH better luck with flies than lures or bait for lake 'bows, but I haven't found any reliable combination for cutts.

bring two rods, one set up witha float, and worms/roe, and one set up for spinning, witha  spoon or smpinner, take some casts witht he spinner and then try the bait set up.

You have a good shot with a dic nite spoon. Much better than a wedding band imo.

Also, don't forget drifting colorados.  Good for either cutties or some late coho.

i would suggest using bait,IE worms, roe ,etc,if you are fishing for cutties, the hard part of fishing for cutties is finding them, once you have found them they will readilly take most baits due to their aggressive nature.

If your going to bushwack down to the river your probably in a remote spot that either:

a. has some fish
b. has no fish
c. used to have fish but you came at the wrong time
d. you spooked the fish and no matter how hot the setup was, the fish have gone

your choice ;)

Try a muddler or wooley bugger, will work for both cutties and NPM's, as others have said cover water, if you find cutties you will hook them with these fies. I usually throw a type 1 slime line for cuts.
