started to fish the upper river around 11:00, water has droped and cleaned up scince boxing day , not much fish up there,one guy caught a nice 8lb wild yesturday, i caught a nice 1-1/2 lb hatchery bow that i let live another day. i was told that it was a steelie{a first year) sounds about right. anyways no succsess today up top, hit the bottom half around 2:30 today,{lickman area) water is really starting to shape up,fished the whole run , finished till four thirtey with no fish, still a great day to be on the flow . Ive been fishing for the last week, and its nice to see the etiquite from guys before they step into a run, i dont know what happens to this when the fish start coming in , in numbers. it would be nice to see this kind of fishing to continue in the coming months. Anyways good luck to all .

Iv noticed the ettiquet as well, but wait till all the flosser come when the fish are staked.

I've never seen an area where they stake and the ettiquet is usaully like this during steelhead season it is just to bad that it does not carry over into other fisheries. There usually are no flossers out because it is to cold for them.

i hit a few spots around noon til dark, saw chris briefly near dark, tried to have a cross river conversation but couldnt really hear what he was saying but it sounded like he was skunked as i was

Hey hey hey , I didnt know anyone really and its close to home so why not poke around, Ive seen some nice steelies caught out of there by people not flossing 

Are you going to fish down there again??   I do ocassionally, but that is rare!!   In three trips to the canal, I have picked three out of there, so it can be productive if the timing is right!!

Years ago my grandpa and I would barfish the canal for steelhead and had good success. Havent tried it since. It would be a good get together though. Build a fire, have some fresh coffee on the go with my portable coleman coffee maker, some good eats. Doesnt sound like a bad idea at all.

That was you kingpin, thought it was CAPTAIN BONK. Got out for a bit over an hour  in the late afternoon, conditions were good from what they had been. All I found was a Maple Leaf Stealth lying on the beach  let me know if you dropped one below Peach Road.

Getting out today for a bit and then, with Gwyn distribute some carcasses' from the Chilliwack River Hatchery for the fertilization project.

That's how fishing should be, I've been debating on bring out one and setting it up on the beach too..but I can't drink any damn coffee now... got to do that more, enjoyment factor 100%

Searun used to do that as well and he said he used to do pretty well. It kind of sounds like fun, sitting back relaxing and enjoying good conversation, but I would be drinking some special coffee with a little kick to keep the belly warm.

I hate all the guys that don't wanna move, because they just set up in one spot and cast all day.  And if u drift just a little bit infront they have a hissy fit. There on the acessable side, while i've hiked with my dad from the canyon down, and i'm actually trying to hook a fish and these guys are just being real ...

Those are the people u have to watch out for, there's a few runs on the vedder like that!

A friend of mine had a run in with a guy on boxing day...we were fishing on the move from the top of tamihi bridge down, when we came into the top of one of the pools down there, this guy stepped out to tie up and talk to his wife. Well we figured we'd just fish through quick as it was getting close to the 2 pm deadline. My buddy starts through first, and he takes a cast or two, and this guy walks back up to him and starts talking to him, well I thought it was just the prerequisite exchange of pleasantries, but as I am fishing through behind my buddy, this guy walks up to me and asks me if the guy ahead of me is a friend of mine. It was strange how he said it, there was obviously some tension there. I told him, "he is a friend of mine, yes...", and fished on...my other friend behind me comes through and this guy then walks up to him and appearently started asking him in a very bitter tone, if we were americans?    To which my friend laughed, and replied "no...", and proceeded to fish through. Well, I asked my first buddy, "what was that all about?", and he tells me this guy was mad at him for standing on his rock! Appearently, according to this gentleman, "he had been fishing that spot all day", and he hadn't moved and was fishing off "the rock next to his beer...", and that we "shouldn't be fishing his spot!!!". He continued to scowl at us from a distance, but didn't say anything more. He was somewhat beligerant, and by talking to him it was obvious he wouldn't be receptive to any form of explaination of ettiquette or technique of fishing a run from the top down and on the move...he "owned" that rock let me tell you...It's unfortunate, he didn't understand the ettiquette involved, and he had little else to say after that...we saw him back at the fish and game club afterwards in line for a burger, but he had nothing to say. None of my group were beligerant in any way, we were very polite, and my friend that went through the pool first had motioned to him that we were going to fish through...this guy just stood there muttering to his wife about us and scowling at us as we fished through the run...
I think he may have just been having a bad day, but he certainly was not the poster child for ettiquette in any way whatsoever...
It's sad really, he seemed like a really unhappy guy. Steelheading shouldn't make anyone feel that way...

you guys did the right thing.... if he had approached his "spot" to begin fishing again i would have moved off of "his rock".... but, people have to learn.... most etiquette following steelheaders won't stand for a fence poster... and rightly so. When i encounter one, I fish through the way i normally would, affording the fence poster his section of drift. If they were to grumble about me fishing below them.... well... that's just too bad.... if they get beligerent... i have bear spray

Heh I had the same problem yesterday, walked into a piece of flywater below on the way, and there was one other guy fishing up above. I started half way down, to fish the tailout. The guy above came down and started at the head, and then 4 guys started crawling out of the bush... two started at far down at the tailout, and the other two went above. By this time, I was done the tailout, and then went up to the top to work the rest, down to my starting point.

Well 2 more guys walked in, and plunked themselves right below me. They were drinking and swearing alot... I decided to not bother with a confrontation, as I knew I would just get pissed off, and nothing would come of it. I was spey fishing, so I needed some space below to perform the cast.

So instead, I just kept 1 stepping down after each cast, and soon I was about 15 feet away, and setting my anchor right in front of him. He finally started moving his butt, and made the effort of giving me a couple of stares. I just smiled and kept stepping down...

Soon he was swearing at his friend to start walking, cause he couldn't, and the f*&#$ing girl above him was gunning him down... Heh nice, very classy

Anyhow, he eventually stepped out and started at the head of the run, which is what he should have done in the first place.

I'm wondering if the vedder anglers will ever become receptive to rotational angling, it helps everyone fish more effectively.

It's unfortunate, but often those who do not follow rotational angling, are not the "receptive" types. In my experience, they seem to be the type that feel they are always right and have something to prove...They also seem to be "meat" anglers who have little respect or understanding for the sport involved. Glory seekers if you will...I know this is a generalization, but I feel a valid one in most cases...
This gentleman I refered to, was oblivious to the concept that he might be in the wrong, he was obviously too preoccupied with his territory and griping to his wife to evaluate his perspective. My impression of him was that he was a "small" man, with the issues often associated with that complex...
Hopefully he learns from sites like this one and reevaluates his understanding of the sport...
