I want to try fishing "Bugs" this year for some steelies, but i have no idea where to go to pump them and what to look for when your on the beach. I'm living in the westend area of vancouver (UBC) and would like somewhere close. If i walk down to wreck beach could i pump there??? YES I KNOW POOR WORDING  Just looking for a little advice.

The closest location around UBC is Spanish Banks. If that fails, you can always pump at Wreck Beach.

What do i look for? Like the same sort of holes clams make in the sand? Or just random spots. Should i go as the tide is coming in, going out? Right at the waters edge, or twenty yards away?

spanish bank has a really big mud flat (more like fine sand and mud) when the tide is low.  You can spot the shrimp holes cause its a hole    with a little hill around it.  I have never pumped them ever in my life, but I have used my hand to just dig them out (usaully I don't find anthing, but sometimes I have caught them) so I know they are there.  Some are like 12 cm long and have one really big claw.

Also, when the tide goes out its really fun to go and look at the weird stuff that get stuck out on the mud. Like little fish and huge crabs, but you got to get there just when the tide is going down, or the gulls will find all the fun stuff first.  The crabs usually hide, but you can spot them as a big pile of sand that just doesn't look right.  If you're a nice guy you can carry them to the water edge and they will wave goodbye at you.

when u bug pump look for little pools or water 1-3 inches deep, its easier to suck wet sand then dry sand! ITs also cool when all the water goes down the holes and into ur' tube, it sucks the shrimp with it. Get like 3 shrimp some times. all the holes are connected so there's gotta be a shrimp in one of them. i use a big 3inch wide PVC pipe, gets alot more than the little dinky 1 inchers. And look for mounds of sand around them just like Johnny 5 said. Good luck

I prefer pumping them at water's edge. The water collapses the tunnel and sucks them out.

I went down to jericho beach today after my classes (4pm). Tide was low and still on it's way out. I was looking for small volcano like mounds but all i saw were this little curles of sand everywhere. They looked like long strings of crap. I'm assuming that is not what i'm looking for.

Don't be afraid to give it a dig. After a while, you'll know what you're looking for.

I used to pump bugs at Jericho but I found the bugs there were too big.  Also lot of effort for the number of bugs. Boundary Bay or White Rock have bugs that are perfect in size and colour and you can get your 50 in 10 to 15 minutes. Use a bug pump to make things easy for yourself.
