GPS Radios
« on: February 01, 2007, 10:00:04 AM »

Been thinking about a GPS/VHF Radio for my boat.  Anyone have any experience with these?  Do you need 2 antennas, a whip and a GPS antenna?  Do you also need a separate gps receiver to connect between the gps antenna and the radio?  If you already have a gps antenna for a depthfinder, can you split the output to go betwen the vhf and depthfinder?  Not sure I want to go down that road if I'm going to have 4 antennas on my boat, (radio, gps for the vhf and gps for the depth finder).  Any help is greatly appreciated.

Depending on your fishfinder.  Some models with GPS antena can uplink to VHF.  Therefore if emergency does occur, coordinate will be transmitted.  These models have to support NMEA, and so should your VHF unit.
