Ok, I tried these nasty varmits today...(cured ones from Reaction) I brought spider thread so thought I would put them on like shrimp tails...Sooooo first question...Do you put the whole thing on your hook? cause the nasty little ba$tards break at the tail and guts go all over the place..and I figure you want the tail right???
So, with just the tail on, it looks pretty dinky, and they don't last very long either..I got to be missing something...

I use the whole bug. I remove the big claw from the males before using.

do you still pierce them or just tie them on?

fresh bugs are best kept in a cool container with sawdust/wood chips or sometimes a damp newpaper in a box or for a day in cold salt water brine.

the fresher the better they stay on.

take off the big claw and i fold the tail in half like the letter J. take the hook point and pierce it through the top of the back and it will be coming out the bottom of the stomach and because of the fold immediately go through the bottom of the tail and then out the back closer to the tail end. i then take my spider thread and wrap it on. after a few casts, the shrimp partially falls off but i still fish with it until it is completely gone. smaller bugs are better.

personally i like bugs the best and belive that this is one of the best baits to use for steelhead. however, i have recently switched over to shrimp simply b/c its a pain in the butt to go out and pump bugs especially when i seem to be catching a lot with shrimp.

by the way are you mat's (fireman) buddy?

Naw but i'm Youngers (firemans) buddy...

So, these cured ones pretty much are not the ticket then??? man, they guts all over and my hands were seriously nasty...luckily I had a towel and wet it so I could wash um everytime but I went through near twenty of those monkeys...

dead bugs after a couple hours become mush and just fall off your hook. Fresh bugs will last about 5 casts. I thread mine just bellow the head and come out just bellow the legs, then wrap the egg loop over their backs.

If you want to take the time, tie your pro cured colored cooked bugs in mesh using thread. They look like a mummy  but I have caught a few steelhead this way and if you tie them up properly they last for a number of casts.
