I HAVE ARRIVED: My Newfoundland Journal
« on: February 17, 2007, 03:20:55 AM »

So we have arrived and it was a very long trip out here. Must say it was not easy travelling with 3 kids. We left home and headed for Abbotsford airport at 4:30pm Thursday. We left Abbortsford airport at 7:45 and headed for Calgary. In Calgary we had a 2 hour stop over. Not much to do as most things are closed in the airport other than a couple coffee shops. So it was now time to board the plane once again and head for Toronto. After a long 4 hours in the air we finally touchdown. It was going from one gate to another as our next flight left only 30mins later destined for Halifax. So we arrive in Halifax after a 2 hour flight where people were getting off the plane as we stayed on the plane. So before leaving Halifax the plane needed to be de-iced. This took nearly an hour before we coulf get back in the air and head for St.John's. Finally we are in the air and headed to our final destination. As we approach St.John's I look out the window and see the beautiful rocky shoreline. Just a beautiful thing. We touch down and its 1:30pm Friday Newfoundland time which is 9am PST Friday. So in total it took us 16.5 hours from the time we left our front door to the time we touched down in St.John's.

I did not sleep on the plane as I just could not get comfortable. So I was on no sleep but did get in a nice afternoon cat nap at my wifes fathers place. So its Saturday morning 8am and I am the only one awake. My plans of fishing are not looking good. Their is about 4-5 feet of snow outside making access to the rivers virtually impossible. I am going to look at every way possible to get out and throw a fly but its not looking good. I was asked to go ice fishing but honestly its not something I am going to enjoy. For one its -4 and with the extreme windchill it feels like about -14. I am going sight seeing on Monday and plan on taking lots of pictures. If I dont get out fishing I hope just to get the total Newfie experience in as well as tons of pictures for us to remember.

Glad to hear you all arrived safely, to bad about the snow and windchill factor. Sort of rules out any chance of fly chucking but I would'nt discount ice fishing. My brothers done it many times and loves it and him and his wife fish inside an enclosure so they're fairly cozy. Well have fun you's guy's :) Look forward to some pics down the road.

Be sure and spend considerable time on George Street to be assured of experiencing the true Newfoundland flavour. ;)

Thats Friday ;)

On another note a storm is coming in. They are expecting 15-20cm's between tonight and tomorrow night. Means my sight seeing for tomorrow could be in jeopardy :(

Don't feel so bad about the fishing Brian. Searun and I went cutty hunting today on the Harrison with winds that where stronger then the interior winds during the day. Man was it blowing.

Should thaw out for a few weeks in the summer for a couple casts. Those trees are real amazing though, stunted but growing in arctic tundra conditions. Don't fight over the mukluks, get some Sorrels. ;D
