Sturgeon shore fishing
« on: April 03, 2007, 11:04:20 PM »

yesterday I was able to get out and make my first cast with my new sturgeon setup that I had bought last year. I went out with a buddy and tried some spots that people had told me to try. After getting our supplys at the tackle shop we headed out to our first stop and wasnt quite sure what kind out water they were tell us to fish, but I though I had some idea what to look for and made a cast out. we worked our way up the dike making casts in about 5-6 different spots. But headed home after 2 hours not sure what we were doing, and not to come try again till we get a better idea what were doing. What exactly should this water look like, one spot was like a big back eddy, the other was a big side pool that came off the frasers main flow......do these sound like good spots?
Any advice would be good.... tthanks

If fishing from shore, fish where their is quite a big drop off and away from the current. 30-50 feet of water is prime. What areas were you fishing? If you let us know we might be able to help you better. Also what was your bait of choice?

There's a great used Lund Jet at Venture Marine in Chilliwack that would greatly increase your catch. ;D

This time of the year it pays to fish the lower river from Matsui to Surrey, as this is where the majority of the eulichons spawn. Match the hatch and fish areas where food will either settle to the bottom or be pushed through by current.

Isn't Ballam road the road on the way to peg or near island 22 somewhere?..I don't know the names as the boat is always in the water.......but that area produces sometimes....anywhere along that dike is good, just be careful not to fall in...this time of year I would assume its anywhere from 25-40 feet deep...depends on the gut though.....I don't know how good the upper river is fishing right now...in my opinion most of the sturgies are down near mission or below....not saying that there is none in the upper, but I think a majority of fish will be down low, up high still fishes good if you can find them!.....but you'll still should have no prob landing 1 up high....I've never tried oolies up this far..I dunno how they work....but 2 other good baits to try are roe in a nylon and eels....always produce for me!

A typical day on the upper river for me....I'll avg it out throughout the whole yr....probably 8-16 fish is the norm...sometimes more sometimes less....its fun....

Good Luck!

So as long as im along the dike and cast in I should be able to hook into something? When Is high tide, and will a bar rod holder be safe enough to use when fishing for them?

Like most have already said. If you want to get into fish than fish below the Mission Bridge. If you plan on making the trip down here I will give you a couple ideas but in the form of a PM or e-mail

Whats the reason for all the fish sitting down at mission? I was hoping I could fish in town since I know where every place is, and make short 2-3 trips at a time. Will the sturgeron fishing eventually pick up out here?

It will pick up there once the salmon are running. The oolies dont really make it up that far. Thats what the sturgeon are feeding on right now so they go where the feed is.

Yes, it will pick up as the season progresses....late summer on you will nail them in there..believe me! people are just looking out for you and offering you the right advice and where the best oppouritunity is to fish...right now its down by mission! and FYI there is no tide up at ballam road....and yes a bar rod holder will work....all though there is some new high tech holder ways of doing it these days....just watch that a big fatty doesn't pull the rod out of your holder...all I can say....when you cast out into the channel...make sure its deep...not like 5 feet....you should be able to chuck it way out there in that channel...just look for the deep part...another spot I would reccomend from shore is the bottom end of peg...where the sand is...I saw sturgies caught in there like a MOFO! its deep....

But is there a good chance will find at least one in a 2-3 hour sitting, along that dike not really sure what were doing? How olong do you spend in a spot before you move on? Do many snags build up in these deep holes? What speed of water do they prefer?

OK we have already told you everything. We cant go out there and fish for you. If you are just going to keep fishing there than dont go expecting anything. If you hook something than it will be a nice suprise. We cant give you a direct answer to that question because we are not fortune tellers.

You have been given very good advice now the ball is in your court. However you choose to use this advice is up to you.
