Had to take the day off work to get some dental work done so as oppose to sitting at home with a frozen jaw I thought I'd venture up to the Vedder to try out my new spey setup complete with skagit line. Got there about 12:30.
It was the first time fly fishing the Vedder and more than anything I was just there to practice my circle cast. I fished behind a guy from the FishBC site who had already gone throught the run with a fly and was now going through it with his baitcaster with roe. Wasn't expecting to hook up and didn't. He left and and I fished awhile longer before taking off myself to find some water lower down the river.
The second spot I went to I met the same guy but this time he was on the other side of the river fly fishing with his single handed rod. We got to talking and after a few casts at the end of a swing, I hooked up. It didn't feel like a large fish. I thought it might even be a good size dolly but it turned out to be a dime bright wild doe. I played it in, figured it to be about 6 pounds, and released it. Should have taken a photo since it was my first Vedder steelie on the fly....oh well.
The water was in perfect condition....about 2 1/2 -3 feet of visibility. It was a good afternoon all in all. The only thing that will really round out the day is a Canuck victory.
