Fish fun and relaxation - May 5, 007
« on: May 06, 2007, 09:19:41 PM »

Went up to Francis for my first trout outing (trouting?) this year.   I brought along a friends son who, at 17, was beginning to get into fishing more and more so I wanted to make sure he had a solid grounding in correct handling etc.  We headed out of town at about 0900, which meant we didn't get on the lake until 1130.  It was overcast and a bit cool, but it seemed pretty calm.  We inflated the fishhunter and got all the gear loaded into the boat and looked at the launch area... The winter winds had moved the logs around - the launch wasn't quite the open water area that it had been in years past :(  After some wading in really stinky rotting mud and gliding the boat around the logs, we got out and manouvered over to a little corner that I have found productive in the past.  We asked a boat that was coming off the lake(the only boat that WAS on the lake) how the fishing had been.  Very slow.  No fish to the boat and very few hits even.  I didn't care. I just like getting out.  Catching fish is always a bonus.

After we anchored and got settled my partner drops the ole worm-on-the-hook down to sit below the boat.  I proceed to cast out a black leach with a barber pole of silver tinsel around it.  Second cast... Fish on!  It's a feisty one.  I bring it to the boat and realize that in my haste to get out in the morning - no net :(  - slack off on the line... fish free!  A nice little 12-14" silvery 'bow back into the lake.  Next cast... Fish On!  this one is a bit longer line release but it had been a nice little one too.  Then.... Nothing.  I suggested to my partner that he try casting out and letting the worm fall on an arc back to the boat.  He was working that, I tried some dries since there were a few surface sippers but neither of us had much more action.

1300, we had nice Timmy H's sandwiches for lunch and rowed over to the other little "generally productive" area of the lake.  After settling down, and starting our casts... My partner has a fish on!  It comes up to the boat but he figures we can let it go.  It's not hooked very deeply at all, so after a quick flip of the pliers he/she is off to enjoy the very cold lake water again.  About 10 minutes later - Fish On!  He brings a nice 14" 'bow to the boat, and it has inhaled the worm.  Oh well, this one's coming home for the barbeque.

We continue fishing until about 1500 but only the occasional nibble on the worm.  My flash had fallen off my leech and I don't think it was as attractive anymore to the fish :(  I tried a Doc (red and black) but no further luck.    It had been a nice day, if a bit cold when the wind came up, and we had the lake pretty much to ourselves.  2 boats came on as we were leaving.  They were camping overnight.  I don't imagine that today was a particularly nice day.  We made it back to Richmond in time for a 1800 barbeque, and the little 14" fish was the talk of all my fishing partner's friends.   We might have created more fishermen :D

I also forgot to add a picture of a scene on the way home.

This WAS a full sized pickup - and not the new convertible type:

Drive CAREFULLY!  I have a feeling this didn't end well  :'(

Francis. (as in Ford Coppola)  West side of Harrison.  Not Florence (as in Henderson) :D

Hello, dragonspeed.Sounds like a pretty good day (other than the stinky part).I  wonder if you would share what your leech was tied with? Was it a bugger with a rib added?I have thought about adding a rib to my leeches but until now I haven't.

Not being a tying man, I can't really give very good detail.

It was your basic black leech with a piece of wide (for a fly) silver tinsel that had about 3 wraps total down the body.  Does that help?

Sorry - no pic :(
