Hope May22 and the Cap May23
« on: May 23, 2007, 04:39:36 PM »

Two extra days off work with the wife out of town meant two days free pass for fishing for me.The Hope one is late but I was too tired yesterday to do anything but nap and watch Anaheim play Detroit.
Arrived in town(Hope) about tenish.Thought I might try the top end of Croft Island. The side channel at the end of the path was running hard at about 5 feet so I passed on that.Ever the adventurer I bushwacked upriver, then waded across the mouth. An unproductive endeavor as the water was too high to safely access anywhere along the Island.I hiked back to the truck to look for greener pastures.Driving past the scale I could see some, and i emphasize some castable water below.Park miles away and proceed to trudge the distance in the heat wearing winter waders along the tracks to the path. How I miss the days when we parked across from the path, before a few ignorant slobs ruined it for everyone and brought about the closure of the top end in the bargain.I am about 40 yards from the path when a very large brown bear emerges from the bush on the upper path walks across the tracks in front of me and stops on the down side.He is very skinny having only recently emerged from hibernation.I would put him at 7 feet and though lean still one of the largest bears I've seen around here.I froze he sniffed the air, looked in my direction then proceeded down the path to the bar!Coward that I am I backtracked once again making it 0 for two on fishing attempts.
I shifted my efforts back to town and the mouth of the Coq.Had a good couple hours casting but no luck ditto for a gent that was bar fishing.Nothing rolling either.Normally I bar fish here but I didn't want to carry all that gear wading and I want to risk a breakin.Needless to say Laidlaw and Seabird Island are the same.I beautiful day with the local  moutons still showing lots of snow.

Well onto to-days trip to the Cap.Saw no boats out front as I passed over LionsGate bridge.First stop directly above the suspension bridge.Conditions were excellent although no fish spotted. At cable pool talked to a fellow angler. We spotted a couple of fish laying up but nothing active.I shifted back down below the highway bridge and spent a couple hours with my centre pin chucking wool.I saw one old boot but was not close enough to identify it.Beautiful day and hard to believe I was in the second largest city in Canada.Just makes me think how lucky we are.No fish but a great day anyway and no bears!

bears are very decieving, its VERY uncommon to see a black bear of that size anywhere in bc, guys who hunt them for years rarely see bears that big, many people mis judge them as they look bigger than they are.

Just thought I'd point out that Vancouver is the 3rd largest city (behind Toronto and Montreal) in Canada.  Anyway, I went to the Cap too (underneath the TransCanada Highway) and no luck.  I was drifting wool, and then put on a Colorado spinner with no success. Saw one coho rise, probably 6 lbs, but nothing else in about 3 hours.  But, it was awesome to get back out there!
