Just doing a school project on the history of fishing industry in BC , i thought why not ask the veteran fisherman themselves.  i just need a few facts thank you  .  Where and when did it begin , How has it grown and what do you predict will happen to the fishing industry in the near future. what problem is the fishing industry faceing.

It will go down the drain if it is not well managed, the resource is very fragile......many sectors of the industry will soon be flooded (guiding for 1)

Heading to the dumps. Fraser gillnetters only get a few days fishing for sockeyes every year if they are lucky. Commercial salmon fishing in the ocean has been severely cut back.

Not that I don’t think people in this forum know a lot about fishing, but I don’t think that some internet fishing forum would be called a reliable and credited source of information by your teacher 

I think you have to hit the books in the library to get this paper done, sorry….

There sure is alot about the history of our fishing industry. If I were doing the project I would probably pick one sector of it and report on it. Like for instance sturgeon.Once considered a nuisance and whitefish was the target, then harvested commercially and almost wiped out across the land, and now one of the most sought after fraser river sportsfish and making a comeback while the whitefish that was oh so popular way back is now on the sidelines.oh how things change They use to run cables from one side of the river to the other with a hook every foot then they would yard them in with machinery and slaughter

The topic is a bit broad, therefore you will find that research is rather difficult. It is better if you narrow the focused area of your topic down, ie. History of the Fraser River fishing industry.

There are three different fisheries - Commercial, recreational and First Nations, so you should also focus on one specific fishery instead of all three. Most of the time, the biggest problem with a research project is that you end up with too much information as opposed to too little. My recommendation would be to focus on the commercial fishery (herring, salmon or sturgeon) of the Fraser River/Georgia Strait.

Like what Nina said, although there are very knowledgable members on the forum, you need to obtain your information the traditional way to have them validated. The best way is still by seeking information from books at the library. A tour around the Georgia Strait Cannery suggested by Nuggy is also a great idea. The staff there can lead you to other sources of information.

One of the biggest mistake in doing a project or essay is trying to do too much. As Rodney said, narrow the scope of your project to a more manageable topic.
