STS Guiding Service Seasonal Update, June 2007

Talk about Floods

There's been a lot of talk about flooding this year due to a large snow pack throughout British Columbia. Until now I really didn't believe it was going to happen but the last few days events have changed my mind. Our property at Harrison Bay is now flooded and it looks like this is just the beginning. Predicted forecast for Harrison Bay is high water for the entire month of June with peak water levels reaching as much as 2 meters over the normal high water line. The good news is that we don't move our boats to Harrison Bay until July 15 so we should be just fine for our summer salmon/sturgeon charters.

Hells Canyon Marine showing us why they are #1

We have run the Snake River in Idaho, Fraser Canyon to Hells Gate and big rapids like Saddle Rock and China Creek Bar, run skinny water on the Lillooet and now running the Upper Pitt on a daily basis. This boat can do it all.

Available in 20 to 28 ft, call Vic for more information.

Salmon Update

The pre-season forecast looks about the same as our last report. We expect some good Chinook fishing in July & August, 14 Million sockeye in early August through to about the 25th and 17 -20 million Pink Salmon with best fishing from Sept 7 to 30. The Fall run of Chinook in late September heading to the Harrison looks healthy as does the Chum & Fall Coho.

Fly-fishing for Salmon

Some our best fly fishing for salmon occurs on the Harrison River in mid September through until late October. The confluence of the Harrison can offer some excellent fly-fishing for Chum & Coho right through until mid November. This year we are focusing more on our wilderness fishing adventures targeting salmon on the Upper Pitt River as well as the Lillooet.

Upper Pitt River Fly - fishing

June to August

June & July offers some incredible fly-fishing opportunities for Sea-run Bull Trout. Last week we did 3 trips on the Upper Pitt with 22 sea-run Bull trout landed, largest was in the 9-11 lb range. Most of the fish were between 3 to 5 lbs.

Once the sea-run Bull trout fishing begin to slow in late July, a strong run of summer Chinook ( Kings) begin to arrive onto the Pitt River. This fishery is low profile, not many local anglers know about it. While fly-fishing for the remaining sea-run fish, there's nothing like hooking up on a 25 lb Chinook on the fly.

Northern Coho on the Upper Pitt

By mid October the Northern Coho begin to arrive to the Upper Pitt, this fishery is high quality with fly-fishing and spoon fishing being best. There are also lots of Cutthroat Trout that move into the Upper Pitt through the lake following the Coho. Best fishing is between October 21 & Nov 15.

New Accommodation

Harrison Bay Cabins - This is a new accommodation option that has not been advertised as of yet. The cabins are 90%finished but the flood may slow down progress. Once we are sure the cabins are completed in time, we will then offer all of our existing clients that are booked for Best Western or Harrison Hotel the option to move over to this accommodation. Once we have done that, we will open dates for new bookings.

Sturgeon Update

Fishing for sturgeon has continued to be very good, although water levels are beginning the rise in the Valley, sturgeon seem not to mind and are still feeding quite aggressively. Ryan and Felix have been on the water almost daily and have had some great catches of fish between 5 to 7 feet. Ryan has caught the largest fish this month, just under 8 ft.

Sturgeon forecast - This year is a "Pink Year" the phrase relates to the 17 - 20 million Pink Salmon that are scheduled to begin arriving, mid to late August. By early September the Fraser River will be chalked full of Pink Salmon. This run lasts until about the end of the month.

All other salmon that enter the Fraser River are heading for their home waters in tributaries to the Fraser. The Pink Salmon are the only mainstream spawners that actually stay in the Fraser. What this means to sturgeon is about 60 million lbs of extra food in the river.

The sturgeon fishing really gets going about mid August when sockeye numbers are large. Once the Pink salmon enter the sturgeon fishing really heats up. This years best sturgeon fishing will between Late August to late October, with September & October offering the very best of the season.

Felix is a local angler who has fished the Fraser Valley for most of his life. Diehard angler is an understatement when talking about Felix and his passion for angling. Felix has guided for the past 3 seasons for one of our local fly fishing lodges and has done some part time work for STS in the Past years. Click Here for Felix Bio.
