JOIN US AT FISH FOR THE FUTURE 2007 ON JULY 7TH
« on: June 26, 2007, 08:26:45 PM »

I would like to welcome all to Fish for the Future 2007 from 10:00am to 3:00pm on Saturday July 7th. The festival will once again take place at the No. 2 Road Pier (London's Landing) in Steveston (see map)This will be the fifth annual event and there are some exciting new additions that all can look forward to.

With the support of the BC Family Fishing Weekend and National Fishing Week, this is a community event hosted in Steveston. A variety of activities usually take place during the event. The event is free, kids who do not have a fishing rod can borrow one during the event. The whole purpose of the event is to promote family fishing, as well as bringing awareness of various environment issues to the general public. Last year's event was well attended, we estimated over 500 people.

Please note that parking is limited so it is best to car-pool or cycle to the event. Juvenile tidal fishing licenses will be available to those who are under the age of 16 and they are free. For adult tidal license, please visit Berry's Bait and Tackle. Limited amount of bait will also be supplied. Food is not available on site. The closest place is a cafe on No. 2 Road just north of the pier. Drinks (pop and water) will be available on site.

Exhibitors and Activities
This year's exhibitors will include:

  • BC Hydro PowerSmart - "Turn it off!"
  • Burns Bog Conservation Society - Bog and Game Booth
  • Chilliwack/Vedder River Cleanup Coalition
  • Freshwater Fisheries Society of BC - Mini Fishing Lessons
  • Orphaned Wildlife Rehabilitation Society - Birds of Prey
  • Seymour Salmonid Society - Salmon Education

Ongoing activities during the event will include:

  • Arts and crafts
  • Fish species station
  • Fishing for Tidal Fraser River fish
  • Fly tying workshops
  • Flycasting clinics
  • River fishing clinics

Volunteers!
I am still looking for volunteers, please send an email to info@fishingwithrod.com if interested.

I hope to see all of you there!

Once you get into Richmond, head West until No. 2 Road, then turn onto No. 2 Road and head south to the end. At the T junction, make a left turn. Immediately you'll reach a three-way stop, then make a right. Continue for about 50 more meters. and you'll see the pier at the bend of the road.

Volunteers, we'll be parking at the business lot across the street from the pier again. The owner is once again generously lending us the lot for the day without charging. Please park tightly, we expect more traffic this year. ;D Carpool with other volunteers if possible. :) I'll be emailing you all again next week to finalize things.

Thanks!

Too bad Dan, maybe next year you'll be back to untangle fishing lines. ;D

Just to be a bit more specific on the river fishing clinic for those who are interested. You'll be able to learn how to set up your barfishing, spincasting and float fishing rigs during the clinics. Chris will be there to explain his barfishing setup while Randog and Big Steel will demonstrate float, lure and sturgeon fishing. This is an opportunity for entry-level anglers to prepare for the upcoming sturgeon, salmon and steelhead season.

Hi Rodney,

Sadly can't make it as it's the wrong London pier ;D

I'm heading off to Ireland on the 10th so need to get the car serviced and the fishing gear loaded.

Vancouver next year, I hope??

Colin

The high tide on next Saturday will be around noon, meaning the fishing period will be quite good since the time between two hours before and after flood tide is usually prime time for fishing in the Tidal Fraser River.

The kids should be able to catch the following species.
  • Peamouth chub
  • northern pikeminnow
  • pacific staghorn sculpin
  • redside shiner
  • Shiner perch
  • largescaled sucker
  • bull trout
  • white sturgeon
  • starry flounder

The fish will be temporarily placed in an aquarium, so everyone will have a chance to learn ways to identify these fish.

Well I was going to take the family to the lake to fish but will now come to Richmond. My son is looking forward to it. Rod what type of bait should I bring for him.

And if Chris is allowed to wear a laughs hat then I will wear a Canuck hat.

Hopefully I can find it from Maple Ridge.

You can wear the Maple Leaf hat, but not so sure about the fishing part after your performance during the pikeminnow derby. ;D

Well I was going to take the family to the lake to fish but will now come to Richmond. My son is looking forward to it. Rod what type of bait should I bring for him.

That sounds good fly guy, looking forward to see you and the family. There will be 10 dozens dew worms available for the kids to use, as well as some shrimp. Those are two typical bait used down there, and dough as well if people want to catch some peamouth chub.

If you're coming from Maple Ridge, come through New Westminster, cross the Queensborough, get on the connector. Once you are off that, you're on Alderbridge Road. Turn left at No. 4 Road instead of going straight until No. 2 Road, this way you can avoid the insane downtown traffic. Continue down to Steveston Hwy, turn right at Steveston Hwy, then turn left at No. 2 Road. Continue to the end where the pier is.
