New rod.
« on: July 20, 2007, 10:10:06 AM »

I got a new fly rod. It's 8 foot,  7-8 weight rod. I am just wondering what type of salmon can be fished with this rod without snapping or anything like that. Thanks.

Personally, I'd stick with Trout, Bass, Steelhead and maybe Coho.  I prefer a little longer rod in the 8 or 9 weight category to fish for anything bigger.  The extra length will also give you some vertical clearance when you chuck and duck some larger flies.  Enjoy your new rod.

Pink, coho, steelhead, bull trout. Bit too heavy for trout and bass. Doable on chums and chinooks, but not the most ideal setup for it. This is what happens when you use a 8wt on a chum (halfway through the video). ;D

Yep. Been there, seen it, done it, happened to me last year with a big Chum on the Squamish, even with someone helping with the fish.... >:(
Have a new rod now... ;D

I guess you're right, I forgot you're talking BC trout and bass and not US trout and bass  ;D ;D ;D

Actually, I was thinking about throwing larger flies like streamers and poppers for bass in weedy areas.  Otherwise, you're right.

It could be worse, someone on this forum once had the top section of his Sage fly rod slipping off just before hooking a chum salmon, which snapped his line before he helplessly watched the top section drifting away. ;)
