Had to take a better fridge up to the cabin on Tuesday with the help of a buddy. Of course once that was done we set up the boats and got out on the lake as fast as we could. The weather was pefect....nice and warm, slight breeze.....perfect for chironomid fishing except for the fact that the water temp. was 70+ degrees. I knew the fish would be on bloodworms. The only problem was that it hadn't been good and windy up that way for a few days meaning the bloodworms wouldn't be free floating in the lower water column and the fish would be doing their own digging for them.
Sure enough...after I hooked a fish and throat pumped him my suspicions were confirmed....some mud in there with the worms. Overall, it was a pretty slow day but I managed to hook 10 with the majority of them in the three pound range. Here are a few pics:
My buddy didn't hook too many but he kept a couple to take home. He confirmed that the one they ate tonight was delicious.... as if it had been hooked in May. Just about all the fish were caught on bloodworms . You'd think that when the plate is set so nicely for them a few inches from the bottom that the fishing would have been much better because our flies were pretty much a perfect match. Oh well.....
A couple of Dave's fish:
Went to another lake about a half hour away the next day. We decided to just use the one boat that I have hidden up there to save time since we had to leave in the early afternoon. It was another banner day. We had the lake to ourselves for the majority of the time. We started hooking fish immediately and had several doubles. Just about all the fish were hooked on my chromie patterns. The fish are a tad thin there but they still fight amazingly well....huge aerials! Gotta love those Pennask bred rainbows. The fishing was steady for the 5 hours we were there and we ended up hooking 40 or so fish so all in all it was a good trip. And I'll be back up there this weekend!! Cheers.
