Unless otherwise stated: zero!  They should put something in red lettering though, to make it more clear...

The water is ok for the speyflossing method they use in that spot below the Mamquam mouth. I was there last week and the guides were putting on a show. Two guys were standing way out in the river talking with their weighted flies hanging downstream for several minutes like bait. The survey volunteer guy on the beach told me about 12 fish were hooked all day by the same method. It gets easier when the fish start to pile up. Some of them are good at casting the big rods, but with all that room behind for backcasting, a spey rod has little advantage.

Spoken like someone who hasn't got a clue!!! Must have pissed you off you couldn't snag something with your baitcaster right???

Don't need to stand way out in the river the fish are close

don't use weighted flies or you'll be hung up on the bottom constantly.

12 hooked all day with that method means that method doesn't work...

backcasting room is only one reason to use the spey and has nothing to do with why you would use them up there...or very at least very little..Before you spout off any more ridiculous statements try learning your facts a little more first huh??? Look around you one here, why is it so dead??? Cause guys like you showed up!!!!

Dont worrie golfie Gearbag dosent know what he's talkin about, they just get jelouse because some fly guy catches more than him.

I find it pretty hard to floss pinks on stripped flies or flies that hang below you.

You figure out who to listen to, and who to ignore.  Selective reading helps (although not really possible if you're a mod :( )

The last time the Squamish and Mamquam were open to Pink retention was in 2003. That was a very large run and everthing looked good with an excellent spawn. Then we had the huge 2003 flood which moved the river around in a major way. The fry monitoring on the Cheakamus indicated low egg to fry survival  ( no big surprise there ) so the 2005 return was already  generating concern before it returned to the river. Then on top of that we had the 2005 Cheakamus chemical spill which did significant damage to the surviving pinks from the original 2003 escapement. We are now in 2007 and were seeing the returns form the chemical spill. Todate returns have been slow which kind of makes sense as the spill happened on Aug 5, 2005 effectivly killing the early returning fish. There was a resonable return to the Mamquam system in 2005 but the Cheakamus was very poor. It is now just a matter of waiting to see if the run improves or it just dribbles in. When the river was open for retention, it closed on the Labour day weekend so were only looking at about 3 weeks from now. I would not hold my breath expecting a retention fishery this year. I for one would not reccomend it as I do not beleive that the run has recovered enought for that.
