Haney Wharf - dry hole for Pinks August 25th, 2007
« on: August 25, 2007, 11:47:53 PM »

Sadly, the Haney wharf in Maple Ridge had nothing but pain and sorrow in the water today for those of us hoping to beat the curve and catch some Pinks.

From 4:30pm to 8:30 pm, about a half dozen of us hucked out spoons like nobody's business, but all we caught was a good chuckle when one poor fella repeatedly lost several sets of good tackle on the bottom. The luckless bastard (not really sure if his parents were married or not, come to think of it) lost enough lead in the river that someone ought to call the Coast Guard and warn them about a hazard to navigation. After his first snag, he bravely tied on a whole new set of gear, but I guess he was frustrated and not paying attention to his knots, 'cause when he casted out it all came free in the air, spilling weight, bait, lure (and what little pride he had left) all over a 30 foot stretch of water. Then he knocked his girlfriend's Swiss Army knife off the dock by mistake and she gave him hell for that too. Part of me was was felling real sorry for his plight... and the other part was going, "This is why you never take your significant other out with you when you go fishing."

Much harder to lie about what happenend when they're standing next to you.

We did get to witness 4 good-sized sturgeon jumping just upriver and downriver of the dock. And maybe 3 or 4 jumping salmon in the 4 hours I was there, but nothing even close to a bite for anyone.

Hey we all know the deal right? You've got a SHOT at the pinks right now in the Fraser, but in reality, unless you're watching for the big tide changes and know the right holding waters to fish in, the odds of catching them are a fraction of what we'll be looking at in about a week or two.

The fellas out with the pink coloured spoons are the same fellas that always show up at the beaches carrying a net. Why? Cause we're the optimistic ones, that's why :)

check the tide tables http://tbone.biol.sc.edu/tide/tideshow.cgi?site=Point+Atkinson%2C+British+Columbia
fish from an hr before to an hour after tide change
you need to add about an hr-hr and half for tide to back up at mission from pt.atkinson

you can fish whenever there may be a few fish holding up here and there. The tides are just better because of all the fresh fish that get pushed up with it.

I have...and they stick closer to shore because the current is greater in the middle rather than shore (unless of course you are on a bend)

Went back out tonight to the Haney Wharf again, most of the same crew was there. Tried from 2:30pm till 7:30pm with no luck. There were about 15 of us there or so and the only fish caught was a 3 foot sturgeon by some guys in a boat just offshore and about 6 or 7 coarse fish (shiner perch and peamouth chubs I think?) by a group of really young kids. No salmon at all and only 3 jumpers spotted the whole time. Despite the total lack of Pinks, it's already turning into a total shoulder-to-shoulder gong show at the wharf... guys snagging each other's lines, kids running amok on the dock and my favourite: the big my friend boats that come in and tie up to the tiny dock every once in a while so their crew can make beer runs to the Billy Miner pub.

Still, the feeling overall is one of optimism and I didn't see anybody get upset. But you know when a new group of fishermen show up and see the crowd, you can tell the look on their faces is, "Damn. Well what did we expect here?"
